Spares for roadtrip

Hello all, I am planning a foray into France in a few weeks and wondered what spares you would recommend I took with me to help me along? Just in case...

All input appreciated within reason!!!

Anything you can pack in, Fan belt, plugs, points, leads, alternator, starter, water, oil - take the lot and you wont need them. I find the space behind the bench seat on the passenger side is a great place to slide boxes into - full of bits and bobs and you can get loads in.

You both need high visibility jackets and they have to be accessible ie on the back of the seat (not in a cupboard somewhere. You also need spare bulbs for the lights.

On the mechanical front, make sure your hoses are in good condition, especially top hose. In seven years of taking a 1968 dodge abroad the only thing that ever failed me was hoses. I usually carry a spare coil, rotor arm, a tube of instant gasket,a length of wire (to tie up the exhaust!) and one plug + plug lead.
