I am looking at re-positioning my spare wheel so I can utilize the space under the floor for a grey water tank. Obvious positions are front or back. If it is bolted to the front will this affect the air flow to the radiator?
If it is bolted to a rear door will this be too much weight for the door or it's hinges? I don't want to mount it on a roof rack as I have garage height restrictions. Has anyone found a space saver tire to fit the Commer PB, as this may offer alternatives?
 
Wouldn’t the front need strengthening as well? Would it be easier to replace the main water tank for a double one.
 
or you could have a grey water tank you only set-up when camping? just a 20l water carrier and a tube
 
I’m looking at mounting mine on the front but using a frame coming from underneath so don’t need to drill the front
 
I would beef up the front bumper and bolt it to that if you wanted to go to the front.

If the rear doors I would weld in some steel bands (maybe 3mm thick) from the inside and bolt it through them. Would obviously require a repaint.
 
Thanks everyone for your comments . Self containment certificate , necessary for camping outside a camping grounds in NZ requires a certain size water and grey water capacity so I need quite a large tank.The van already has quite a lot of weight in the front so my preference would be the rear doors. I appreciate some strengthening of the door would be necessary but the real question is would the door hinges take such a load. I would mount the wheel on the rear door drivers side and overlap the other door .Anyone done this or experienced in engineering to tell me the capacity of the hinges or mounts please ?
 
The hinges would be able to take a wheel all day long. Perhaps you could make a bracket or cradle that hung over the back door that held the wheel. A couple of grub screws to keep it in place and couldn't be moved when the door was shut.
 
Ahh that explains the need to move wheel. If it was easily removable (but padlocked) then it wouldn’t be such a pig to keep opening/closing on site. The small door retainer is probably the weekest point and you will remember to be careful but a drunk mate or kids may not realise. It would really hurt if it swung shut on fingers. My experience with door wheels parked on slopes etc
 
Think I would try & keep it inside the van until on site then lay it on ground by back doors use it as a step!I think it will stop air flow to radiator...what conversion have you got?
 
Roof rack or buy one of those roadside puncture repair mushroom kits like the breakdown services use.
I will be interested to know what you do as I will have a similar problem soon as my exhausts will be in the way of the spare wheel
