Sound deadening

My Commer has zero sound insulation from the engine and as a four speed sings a nice tune at high (ish) speeds... So I have a plan to add sound deadening... Whilst I get the need for heat resistance in the engine lid and the avoidance of foam that can get soaked wet has anyone done more than insulate the engine lid and under the bench seats? Anyone tried under the shell arches for example, and anywhere else?

I believe a hot water cylinder jacket (the shiny ones) do a good job under the lid, There are loads of types of sound proofing on ebay, there's a black sticky-backed type that looks promising but I've not used it myself.

I've done all mine and makes a big difference...around the metal shield that's in the cab I stuck some sticky back silver foam stuff I got from Steve Williams, doesn't unpeel and doesn't interfere with airflow. on the engine lid I used standard under bonnet mat and glued with high temp contact adhesive, did the same around the back of the engine bay and under the removable panels under the seats. I also made some square mats out of it to go under the seats until someone remakes internal wheel arch covers (there was talk of it on here). All in all hasn't affected the engine temp at all . TBH a new SS exhaust and a load stereo also helps - next I'm going for an electric fan, a lot of the noise in the cab seems to be from the mechanical fan whizzing round at high revs.

Jimberlake - many useful tips. Thanks. If I go to an electric fan I'll probably have to change from dynamo to alternator. Lots to think about. I've bought foam and insulated foam from ratsport.com. I'll try that together with the £1.50 earplugs from Wilkos!

To be clearer the silver foam is on the inside of metal box bit that goes round the radiator I think it might be to go behind house radiators originally...on the outside of that I've also used the standard campervan interior felt stuff you get in a variety of colours held again with contact adhesive. Helps alot and looks v smart.

Hi All,

I put dynamat under the engine deck lid and all around the engine bay but blimey it is still deafening. Anybody think carpeting the top of the lid and under the seats would work?

I can't carpet the entire van as it carries animals and my muddy gumboots in it sadly.

Closed cell foam is probably the best way forward, carpet in top wouldn't hurt. Also try a few pads of Dynamat on the rear sides to stop them drumming, you don't need to cover them just a few strategically placed ones will work as well.

The Dynamat is to stop large panels from drumming but won’t stop normal noise (if it’s the tar and foil stuff). I’ve used the anti drum matting a lot but then added the thick matting, the type you see under car bonnets. Added this on the engine lid, the front engine cowl and the removable panels. I’ve also gone a bit crazy this winter doing the front panel of the van etc. Someone once told me most noise comes from any small gaps or holes so worth checking the seams. This is where I’m up to at moment. I’ve also got some original engine and wheel arch covers I’ve restored to add. Hoping it will be much quieter in there if I get to go out this year!
