Something a bit different

Decided to get something a bit different as a classic daily driver. I was going to get a Hillman Superminx Estate, that was in an auction at the weekend, but the computer let me down at the last minute, so got this from Watford today:). Did 70mph all the way home, doubt the Superminx would have done that :I

Not keen on the Sh*t brown colour, but it's very solid.

Nice motor[8D] We'll have to form a classic estate car splinter group:D Useful tools, I can confirm that you can get 14 bin bags full of hedge, tree and grass cutting plus an knackered microwave into the back of a Traveller:)

Had one of those as my daily a few years back, not a bad old bus, although the whining diff nearly made me deaf on a trip to Wales :I

The tail pipe looks like it could do some damage to your shins when loading bags of cement into the back:I

Nice one Martin, could always fit a Stag V8 in it, it's already got the Stag wheels fitted. To be honest brown is one of those colours that needs to be nice and shiney to look good. How about doing it in that lovely Iris blue that the vee dub was done in, Im sure you could have it done by the weekend :). By the way I've managed to repair the damage to Brian and so far the paint has matched really well, just need to do the lower colour section but the woodwork needed repairing behind the panel so that has slowed progress a little, plus I'm having to do it outside so am very reliant on the weather, thanks again for your help with the brakes recently.

V8 is temping, but the straight 6 is very smooth. Do Stags have PAS, I can't remember[?]

I would stick with the straight 6 to be honest and yes the Stag does have PAS which I'm guessing would fit the estate.

You came to Watford and didn't stop by? I'm hurt, emotionally distressed.

Not back at work until Monday, got a garage base to build!

You won't be disappointed, these are wonderfully practical cars. What motor and gear box set up has it? I still have my old 1973 Mk2 2.5PI Estate and Mk1 2.5PISaloon in mothballs. I miss the smooth comfortable ride and that great 6 cylinder sports exhaust note when the windows were down. My Estate was an auto originally, but I converted it 4 speed manual and the difference in performance was amazing. Never got around to fitting an overdrive gearbox as with the 14" wheels and 3.45/1 diff it would happily cruise at 130k/h (80mph)@ 4000rpm all day. Did a trip with the them Misses and 3 from Sydney to Brisbane on the "Old Pacific Highway" in the 90's, a pleasant 11 hour drive for all. It just gobbled up the miles, regardless if they were twisty secondary roads or high speed motorways. I think these Triumph Saloons and Estates are some of the most underrated classics around that can quite easily be used as a daily driver in the 21 Century. I wish I had the money to throw at both of these cars. If I did, they would be restored and on the road and used daily.

Cheers Stephen

By the way, if yours hasn't got power steering, just get the PAS out of a later 2500S as they all had it standard. It will just bolt in, I fitted PAS to my Mk1 Saloon, takes a couple of hours, making a spacer and drilling 2 holes for the Steering pump mount and a wheel alignment. My 73 Mk2 Estate and "Spares" 75 Saloon both had it as standard equipment. I am sure it was an option on most later models. The PI's were marketed as a High performance Luxury car in their day and PAS was starting to become the norm not the exception.

PAS is 2.5 turns lock to lock against 4 on the manual steering, and does make then so much easier to park, and if a "partner" is involved she will be more than happy to drive it.

Cheers Again
Stephen

First car I drove on the road was a '75 2500S auto saloon belonging to a friend. Great car.

Rain created some delays, base should be finished next week. Then I have to replace my side fence. Once that's done I need to count my cash and see if I have enough left to order the garage itself! Hopefully up and weather-tight by Christmas.

ive had dozens of these, the estate one was my second car I ever owned, I wired up the over drive to work in second gear as well, lovely smooth engines, the best triumph ever made I think. that's why I always said when I first joined this form, I wonder if you could fit one into a comer, its only two more pots to try and squeeze into the engine bay. imagine how smooth the van would ride then.and how nice it would sound, if you fit a sports exhaust from chris whitter, which he makes for these.;):p
