SOLD 1973 Commer PB camper for sale - new photos

1973 Commer PB 1750cc Autosleeper

My Commer is now back from being MOT'd (just needed the brake balancing and a new screen was bottle) and ready for sale. I've braved the horrendous weather today to take lots more photos, particularly of the interior, but also of the bits of rust. I should note that it's been in storage for the winter and then went straight to be MOT'd, so it hasn't been cleaned or polished and is certainly not looking it's best in today's elements!

I would describe the van as in Condition 2, and as you can see the body is generally very good. As far as I know it's never been repaired or welded and the MOT garage commented how clean it is underneath. However, as can be seen in the photos, there is rust around the drainage gutter on the roof; they do have a tendency to go here. The worst of it is on the offside corner, where there is a small hole. If you didn't want to have it repaired professionally, I would treat the rust with Ronseal Kurust, fill any pitting and put a neat edge of Smoothrite around the guttering which would stop anymore rusting.

The interior is also very original, with a gas cooker, fridge and sink with foot pump. The upholstery is two-sided with a floral pattern on one and smart red vinyl on the other. It's a very neat Autosleeper conversion with electric hook-up, power points, dual batteries, two strip lights, a water tank, cupboards (everywhere!), formica worktops and a genius double bed which involves folding down the interior panels to reveal an extra few inches of space (comfortable for me and I'm over 6'1")! It's even got the original wooden wheel wedges to level the van on uneven ground.

It has been regularly serviced and well maintained since I've had it, with history from West Country Classics and my local garage. The engine is sweet - 29,000 odd on the clock, whether this is original I don't know, but the West Country thought that from the condition, it might well be.

I want it to go to a good home and am looking for offers from £2500 + the cost of 6 months tax (which I bought today).

Any questions, just ask. Thanks, Dom

Great photos and a very honest looking description. It doesn't look like it would take much to make it A1, particularly with that original interior. How can you part with it? If I was in a position to buy, I would be knocking at your door. :p

WOW! - lovely van with great condition interior - am interested to see sticker on dashboard under speedo...

Bessie has a darker patch there where sticker used to be so interesting to find out what used to be there - a warning to all those attempting a handbrake turn! (know of someone that tried this once in a commer which involved some head-on wall braking:I) can make some of writing out from photo but would love to know what the rest of it says if you can read it better in the flesh:)

Good luck with sale - an excellent buy - noticed the red vinyl seats like mackers;)

Bessie - four star commerdation

Thanks StudioCommer, the on the dash sticker says…

'THE PARKING BRAKE ON THIS VEHICLE OPERATES ON THE FRONT WHEELS AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS ARE NECESSARY WHEN JACKING THE FRONT WHEELS'

Sensible advice, I'd say!

Thanks renaultvation… hopefully it should give people a fair idea of the van, although I'm trying not to get too much into EBay territory, accounting for every blemish in fear of getting a bad rating! She's an old girl who's lived a little, it all adds character I think, and it's best seen in the flesh. These things do have their own personalities!

Driving it back from the garage yesterday, with the usual grins it attracts from other drivers, I nearly did have second thoughts about selling it, especially as my plan is to buy a tent for future camping trips - not a particularly enticing prospect in the current weather we've been suffering!

She is just like mine inside...the delux front seats and the slightly different bed layout (wider - no cupbards). Really think you should keep her..or at least promise not to sell it to anyone outside the Duchy!!!

Don just been looking at your photoes it is the twin of my van, Interia is the same and she was white before I painted her. Good luck with the sale

Cheers Macker - just checked out your restoration photos - you did an amazing job putting her back on the road. Apart from the fabric side of the seat cushions, our interiors look identical.
