Im thinking of fitting some large panels permanently to the Dog once i get it home - the CI autohome, has a large roof - and its up high so wont be seen. Bear in mind though that to maintain efficiency you must be able to clean them - dont go for the piddly little ones as they just supply enough power to slowly trickle charge a battery - you need to go as large as your budget will allow, then you also have to consider the "gubbins" to get it connected into your system.

it may be worth researching the deep cycle battery set up(buy 2 6v deep cycle batteries and link them to make a 12v battery then use a small solar panel to trickle charge them and then have an inverter coming off your batteries-might be worth a look.
Food for thought. We have 240 volt hook up, so this runs the main lights and anything else we plug in. The leisure battery powers the fridge and also the 12v lights. Just thought a bit of solar power could help keep the leisure battery charged.
What wattage on the van admin? Seen a 15w one for 60 quid.
Try Maplins, we bought solar panels for the boat which work really well
The 4 panels provide 60W and keep the 2x110amp/hour batteries in tip top condition, all for £199 We had to buy a splitter to charge each battery, but that device is only £20, also in Maplins. I ditched the frame and screwed the panels directly to the boat roof. The same principle could easily apply to a camper

Have you actually had the pleasure of driving a commer yet?? Its not so much the slownes its the lack of power and how your life flashes before you when you try and pull out a junction with modern day traffic and cars that reach 60mph before a commer has done 10mph!! lol
Its good fun though. I would spend your solar money on a few go faster mods for that extra UMPH trust me you will need it with that big turtle shell on the back of the dog
Mines got a few tweeks and they have made it alot nicer to drive.
