So has it been done?

Been doing a bit of reading and wondered if anyone has actually fitted a turbo to a 1725 and what would realistically be involved? How would boost work with a carb? (Im running an SU)
Anyone?

I just need a good rootes...

It's probably been tried in one of the cars. You can use a SU for both suck and blow through set-ups :)

I saw that alpine, a bit ott for me as was more thinking of something i could just bolt on/adapt without becoming an engineer/lotto winner. Lol... Somebody should develop a kit...Tim...?

I looked into doing supercharger kits, but it wasn't going to be easy or cheap :(
Not sure that the extra heat of a turbo is welcome in a Commer engine bay ;)

As an option to a turbo, how about something like this (just pretend the cylinders are all in a line and that carb is an SU or two):

Good write up here:

Yep, an SC12 out of a Toyota MR2 or Corolla/Levin. Can be had pretty cheap on TradeMe when they pop up.

Now this looks like an awsome upgrade. Finding the space for it in a commer could be a bit of a challenge though! Actually giving this some real thought, what would be the real world issues with a conversion like this on th rootes 1725?

Space is the biggest problem. You also need to sort a drive off the crank, and do all new manifolding to suit. Unfortunately it all needs to go on the same side, so the alternator has to be moved straight away. Other than that it will need very good head studs and exhaust valves, also an ignition that will retard with boost.
I tried to fit an Eaton blower to the Colonel but there was just too much going against it :(

Remote turbo, turbo'd su from a metro turbo, a manifold from Tim. Job jobbed :) just like that. Lol

All joking aside, I turbo'd a mini OK and I'm going to need custom manifolds for my holbay head, so I'm thinking about a turbo. My dished pistons and the holbay head should make for pretty low compression. Megajolt ignition can sort the timing retardation. Probably pie in the sky but I'm thinking about it

Turbo is not really the right kind of power curve for a Commer, supercharger would be better :)
Don't forget the further away from the engine that a turbo gets, the worse it responds.
Megajolt is a very good ignition solution [^]

Why can't the blower go here:

What's in the way? Just ditch the dodgy old fuel pump for an electric, maybe remote mount the oil filter? Even the dizzy is in the right place at the back of the engine. An SU modded intake would still work with a bit of piping to the blower. Only major problem I can see is that the blower might foul the engine bay. ????

You could try putting it that side, but don't forget access to the plugs and also the gear linkage. And then you have to get all the plumbing over the other side. Either way it's quite a mission :)
