Definitely a dust cap now the pic is bigger, but whether it's off a Commer or any other Rootes vehicle I just don't know. It looks like a couple of MIG weld tacks holding it on, you could always grind them off, have a look and tack them back again:I

I might get brave and try that, like you say though, I could buy parts and find its not off a Commer! You can just see a rubber seal on the inner part of the joint, one of the rubbers doesn't look great.

Like you say, it might be best to fit it back temporary then get Smurfs prop shortened afterwards

Yes, they are just blanking caps to keep the grit out, should pop out ok :)

it would seem the 'dust cap' was holding all the needles into a rubber that disintegrated pretty much

Are there any grooves that might take a circlip?

I think you could be right:)

The 'U' seems to have the indent where the circlip should go, but no sign of one when it came apart

So, should the new one be just the one 'U' or will it be both bits? if that makes sence?

The bits you will get are the cross piece and the bearings that fits between the yokes, I don't think circlips will come with it:I

The 'cap' as you can see goes a lot deeper than just being a cap and certainly does not go in far enough to get a circlip in.

I could always weld it back in I guess....

Yes they will but they will stick back in with grease. You need to take the caps off to get the joint in and then push them back in from the outside of the yokes. You might get away with just removing two of the caps, just see if they fit in the holes in the yokes first:I

I cant see that well from the pic but it doesnt look like it has a hole to take a grease nipple, but make sure its a regreaseable UJ, (as the non regreaseable ones dont last long)
I would recommend Hardy Spicer brand which are still going and were OE

Well, thankyou guys:D The testing bit will be putting it into Smurf:)

Silly me took the support bracket off to paint it and didn't notice it is slightly shorter one side than the other...now I don't know which way it goes Doh!!
