setting fanbelt tension by torque

Hi have heard somewhere that you can set the tension in a fanbelt by seeing what torque applied to the alternator causes it to slip against the belt

has anyone else heard of this - and what setting should it be.

poking it to see if it moves 1/4" doesnt seem that technical in comparison

Never heard of that. I usually twist the longest run and if it goes 1/4 way round I leave it, any more and I tighten it a tad.
