security

When I had my last commer about 25 years ago there was no security as the back door could not be locked from inside, there was an alarm which was activated by a switch under the dash, I can't remember how it worked but I had so long to get out after switching it on and so long to switch it off when I got back in. The main problem was when I went to bed at night, the back door could be opened by anyone. The last van, a VDub had a double alarm, it could be full or part. When I left the dogs inside, the inside sensors were turned off. Is it possible to have alarms like that fit to a commer and also what sort of lock do you recommend for the back door for locking it from inside. Is it possible to have central locking fit or would that cost an arm and a leg.

I saw the best and simplest answer to locking the door from the inside on Gladys. Simply drill a small hole through the door lock casing and into the catch, you can then push a little rod into the hole and voila - it's locked[^]
You can still get alarms that work off door switches - you just need to fit door switches:)

Central locking would be all your arms and legs as there are no solenoids already there. You could just use a suffolk overlatch (like an outside door) which would be a £5 2 minute fix

For the last 33years I have locked the rear door on Nelly outside
then pull the door shut from inside. You just open from handle
inside to get out. Just remember to take the key to unlock the
back outside as you get out

Hi everyone.Thank you for the advice given so far. The answer from Roy sounds interesting except for the fact that I would be scared to death of leaving the keys in the van. The answer from John would appear to be the easiest and cheapest, unfortunately it is so long, about 25 years, since I last owned a commer that I can't remember what the inside of the door looks like. 25 years ago security wasn't such a problem but nowadays with England being an open country for every sort of criminal from just about anywhere in europe, it is something that we have to look at seriously.

interesting point of view this one... "with England being an open country for every sort of criminal from just about anywhere in europe". Most of the criminals that would open your Commer come actually from England itself. But that is just... another point of view.

i have a simple sollution to locking from inside. dolly has a bolt lock at the top and bottom of the door. does the job nicely :)
