Hi Ross!
Seatbelts area a bit of a hot topic, what with there rarely being anything decent.
Along the front its pretty straight forward as there are proper mounting points, in the back its a bit of a DIY effort.

Good evening all
Apart from the obvious safety benefits of belts in the back, is it necessary to fit them if you want to carry passengers?
We have a Tourstar with side facing seats and i am no where near as practical as the majority of you lot. So fitting frames etc my be beyond my capabilities
Does anyone know what the law says about passengers who aren't belted up[?]

Because this vehicle is pre seat belt law, if belts are not fitted, then there is no legal requirement to have them. If you fit them, then they should be used.

I once got pulled over by the police for not wearing a seatbelt in my minor...
Mr Copper: "S'cuse me sir, I've noticed you're not wearing a seatbelt"
Me: "There aren't any"
Mr Copper: "Is that legal?"

I have had dealings with the old bill before regarding seatbelts. Once while driving my old splitty VW van. It was a single cab and early commercials were not fitted with seatbelts.
A police woman was adamant that I was breaking the law and a fairly heated arguement ensued. In the end I almost had to force her to get in touch with the authorities to get confirmation.
The look on her face was priceless
The great thing was the policeman she was with was sound, he spent his time sat in the front of my motor asking questions about it and he burst out laughing when she came back from the car with the answer she really didn't want.
Happy days.

I looked at the link an he mod'd the seat to face forwards, but what if you are sitting sideways on in the back how effected would a seat belt be in a crash??
I guess some is better than nothing.

Autosleepers are pretty cool as they seats are can be configured to face forwards when they came out of the factory. All I did was fit a steel frame underneath it with a seatbelt on it.
I agree with the sideways seats - not much safety there!
If anyone wants any more pics/info on my intallation just let me know

a word of warning to anyone fitting belts to free standing back seats, make sure the top of the belt is mounted about shoulder height and not over the shoulder and down to the floor/seat base, as in an accident this will cause spinal compression.
