Sealey Tools - poor quality and replacement parts.

I've got a 2 tonne engine hoist which I use about 2-3 times a year. Yesterday I went about changing the cat on my transit as I lifted the engine the piston fixture snapped clean in two! So that meant I couldn't go to work today :-(
Anyway I removed the broken piston and phoned sealey to see if I could get a spare part but they said that I would have to purchase a whole new fitting which includes the piston and the cylinder at a cost of £120.00 + vat and as their stuff is made in china it won't come until the second week of February at the earliest. The moral of this story is that at the time I decided to go against my gut instinct and purchase a Clarke hoist as the sealey unit was £200.00 cheaper and as always the cheaper option will end up costing you more in the long

Should it look like this?

That's thing Panky it is removeable, I've already removed the defective part it's a very small piston with an 8mm hole at the top for a pin to slide through. I contacted sealey earlier today but they would not supply just the piston but told me I would have to buy a "cylinder kit" which includes a new cylinder as well as the piston! £120.00 + VAT! They're out of stock as well. I'm on my way to hydraulics parts place in hackney I'm hoping its a standard off the shelf part.

Greg that does look very similar, I will scour the net later if I have no luck but I'm hoping to source the part today to allow me to get back to work tomorrow. What seemed like a half day job has turned into a mare.

Well I took it the haudralic factory in hackney and they're currently machining a new piston out of a steel of higher qaulity than the original one which broke yesterday due to the original piston being made of a cheap metal. Which is what I suspected as the hoist hasn't had much use and hasn't lifted anything over 700kg. So at least I'm future proofing the weak part of the hoist. Bloody annoying all the same.

No utter rubbish, the piston had distorted slightly, this was pointed out to me in the hydraulic factory, it then became stuck in the cylinder so when i was pumping the handle the increased friction was putting increased pressure on the weakest point which was where the pin went through the 8mm hole at the top of the piston. It all comes down to Sealey using cheap metal to manufacture pistons.
