Rusty Bolt Removal!!!

Hi all.

I'm losing the will to live in trying to extract some rusty bolts[}:)][:(!][V][xx(] i'm changing my discs and brakes on my works van and the bolts which hold on the caliper bracket just won't budge a bit. Any ides? I have soaked them in WD40 and left them overnight to no avail. I have a heat gun, will it help? How would they remove these in a garage set up? Surely there is a way without breaking them?

Advice would be wicked;);):D

Plus-gas works better than WD-40 ;) Yes heat will help. A good fitting socket with a long breaker bar, or tube extension normally works.Or an impact driver if you have one. It also helps to slightly tighten them first. :)

Cheers Tim but it's a Hex key fitting. I have an impact driver but no Hex bit. I'll go and tighten them up if i can then and grab the heat gun;)

In that case find something to lengthen the key for more leverage (tube/big ring spanner etc) good luck mate ;)

I agree with the Plusgas comments. Helps if you clean the area before you spray too, so that it can get penetrate more easily. A bit of heat never hurt either
 
They are high tensile steel and usually Locktited in, when they go they go with a bang[:0] A bit of heat is good but mind the seals.

What make is the van? I have Fiat vans and every one is a s*d, sometimes snapping off [V] The new pads come with bolts, but it doesn't help if the old ones snapped off in the hole [xx(]

Thanks for all the advice, you can truly rely on this forum for help within minutes most of the time:) managed to get the discs off by heat and a 1.8kg Club Hammer;) the caliper bolts came off courtesy of Tim's longer ratchet idea. I just used the bar off my hydrolic jack. Vauxhall Combo is the van Martin;) My trusty old shag heap lives through yet another M.O.T[^] Thanks again guys, hope this thread will help others.

Use plumbers "instant freeze" - they use it for pipes. It always cracks the rust seal as it freezes. Expensive method but 100% effective.
