Rupert's Roof Rust

Hi all,
In preparation for summer, i thought i'd do some cleaning of my roof - mainly to replace the rubber seal and cure an annoying leak around the driver door frame - and make it look a bit tidier. I made a bit of a mistake though. After removing the hinges, i lifted the roof a bit along the drivers side, and found a few badly filled-in patches - rather than leave them alone i thought to myself 'i am going to do this properly and repair the bad bits'. An hour later, i found the extent of the damage that the repair job had covered up. Pics are here:

Nasty, i think you'll all agree. The bulk of the holes are above and just behind the driver's door, but the entire length of the curved section of the roof down the drivers side is in a generally ropey condition.
Now I'm looking for advice:
1) How easy should this be to fix (for a competent welder, with about 3m of wolfys roof edging)?
2) Does the current damage (it looks like the bad repair had been done years ago, and water has been trickling in since then) look like there could be worse down the line? I'm mainly thinking of the pillar behind the drivers door which possibly has had a minor stream running through it whenever it rained.
3) Any idea of what sort of quote i should be looking for?
4) Anyone know of someone nice in the Northwest who will come over and make my problems go away?

I'm without MOT at the moment, so can't drive anywhere :(

That's some pretty serious rust there [xx(] We can make all new roof sections and make it pretty again, but it won't be cheap [B)] and we're not that far away, just the other side of the big hill ;)

Anything is fixable you just need time, pateince and if you don't DIY then cash:I
Hopefully the pillar will have acted like a drain pipe and will be OK - but there's bound to be damage at the bottom, around the doorstep and inner cill[V]
This is the huge Viking roof if I remember correctly so if you don't faithfuly re-create the moulding in the metalwork it won't be seen ;)

Routine maintenance for your average commervanfan:I

Ideal opportunity to brush-up/learn y'DIY welding skills, especially as most of it will remain unseen and is easy to get to.
 
I've got no welding skills at all - though i am a dab hand with a soldering iron ;)

Does this look like a good job to learn with? If it was a panel patch, i'd be tempted (i've always secretly wanted a welder in the garage), but i'm a bit concerned about the bulkhead damage (the arch above+behind the drivers seat).

The cost of a welder would be covered by not having to shift the van on the back of a lorry somewhere... I'd just need to start by removing the Viking roof completely, getting a big bit of tarp to cover the resulting hole... Hmmmm...
Depending on recommendations, I may have to open a thread with lots of progress pics of my attempts to weld ;)
 
You can always come to mine sometime and we'll have a welding practice session on some scrap metal (no not Harvey but I do need the pracice:I)
I live in Widnes and I seem to remember you reside in Liverpool.
