RUNNING PROBLEMS WHEN VERY HOT

HI AGAIN [8D]
NOT BEEN ON HERE FOR A WHILE BUT DO READ THE FORUM NEARLY EVERY DAY, GOING TO ISLE OF MAN TT RACES IN THREE WEEKS IN MY COMMER VAN , JUST GOT THE COMMER THROUGH HER MOT TODAY, BUT BROKE DOWN THREE TIMES ON THE WAY HOME !!!. SEEMS TO BE HEAT RELATED AFTER IT IDLES FOR A WHILE AND THEN I SWITCH IT OFF,IT WILL NOT START JUST CRANKS FOR AGES, CHECKED FOR A SPARK WHICH SEEMS OK,WHEN IT COOLS DOWN IT STARTS.
DONE ALL THE USUAL MODS LIKE MOVING THE FUEL LINE AWAY FROM THE ENGINE,EVEN MOVED THE COIL AWAY FROM THE HOT ENGINE.
ANYONE ANY IDEAS???
I HAVE ELECTRONIC IGNITION AS WELL WHICH WHEN I FITTED IT LAST YEAR BLEW UP A BRAND NEW COIL FITTED THE OLD ONE ON AND IT SEEMED OK.ANY ONE KNOW OF A SUPER DOOPER COIL THAT I CAN FIT WHICH MIGHT HELP THE STARTING PROB (FLAME THROWER COIL) ?

THANKS AGAIN COMMER MATES :D

Is the heatsink (very thick washer) in place between the carb and manifold?

Hi Amos it could be the age old snakeskin problem causing fuel starvation[V]
If it the SimonBBC points you've got the he insists you use a standard coil, a 'sports' one will burn out.

THANKS :D
IN MY HEART IT FEELS LIKE A FUEL PROBLEM I STILL HAVE A SPARK WHEN IT WILL NOT START.
MARTIN IT DOES HAVE THE BIG SPACER IN PLACE.
PANKY I HAVE TWO FUEL FILTERS IN PLACE AND THE COIL I HAVE IS THE STANDARD COMMER ONE.
ALTHOUGH I STRIPPED THE CARB TODAY AND FOUND A FEW SMALL PIECES OF WHAT LOOKED LIKE BLACK RUBBER IN THE FLOAT CHAMBER WHICH I THINK HAS COME FROM ONE OF THE FUEL LINES (WHICH I HAVE NOW CHANGED FOR NEW ONES). I HAVE AN ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP AND AGAIN WHEN IT DOESN'T START I PULL THE PIPE OFF AND IT GUSHES FUEL SO DON'T THINK IT IS BLOCKED ETC. HOPING THE BLACK RUBBER THINGS MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE PROBLEM WHAT U ALL REC ?

THANKS AMOS[8D][8D][8D]

Hi Amos

could be snakeskin, mine gets clogged a little from time to time, it is good practice to treat 1/4 of a tank of fuel as empty, in other words don't let it run too low to lessen the risk of sucking up crap from the bottom of the tank!

the way you describe your problem, it seems to be heat related, it gets VERY hot in that engine bay and the heat can vaporise the fuel before it reaches the carb. Invest in some fuel line, long enough to go right round the front of the rad (mine follows the floor pan) as this will keep it away from that hot engine...

every little helps:D:D

A good tip for clearing the jets without taking them out?....get a bicycle pump and a adaptor for blowing up footballs, it gives a concentrated blast of air in the most awkward of places:D

If its not a blocked jet then its the excessive heat in the inlet manifold causing the fuel to evaporate before reaching the engine [xx(] the two manifolds being bolted together causes most of the hot starting problems [V]

Thanks :D

I will have a look at all the things mentioned, I have re routed the fuel line as before it was over the rocker cover which is very hot indeed. When you mentioned the fuel level well it hit a cord as it is very low now and shows that it is nearly empty, hope fully all the mods, clearing and putting more fuel in it will sort it..
Will let you all know how it goes and how the trip to the isle of man TT goes especially when four of us are all travelling across and we are all at least 16 stone each !!! so it will be a road trip and a half..

Thanks again

oh dear - sounds familiar - I had a similar problem a afew weeks ago. I've put some more heat sheilding under the carb fload chamber (must fit that SU!) and replaced the pipes with braided ones, also routed the fuel hose into the space in front of the radiator.

hope you get it sorted - if you find something amiss please let us know!

Thanks:D BMM ive ordered some heat reflective sheet to stick on the bottom of the float chamber hope this will help.. going for a longish run tomorrow to the beach so will try her out

Then its the 170 mile run to Halsham in three weeks to go to the isle of man TT on the ferry will try and post some photos when i get back

Thanks

Well the plot thickens !![?][?][?][?][?]
Went out for about a 20 mile run today to the beach, she ran fine for about 10 miles then i noticed the temp gauge rising to just before the red, this is when i had the problems holding back and stalling at junctions, seems that all the problems stem from the heat.
well this is the thing i never had this over heat problem until i put a electric fan kit on it when i rebuilt the engine. the only one i could get to fit the rad was a 12'' one, when i look at it now the fan only covers two thirds of the rad, still have the old type fan any one had similar probs with these kits ? think i should go back to the old fan and try that ?
Ordered some heat shield sheet that I'm going to put over the fuel pipes and under the carb to help the hot start problem.
please let me know what you all think times ticking to my IOM trip and the big white elephant looks like she need more cash throwing at her.

Thanks again Commer mates :D

Try taking out the thermostat, just in case it's sticking. Then run it again.

Thanks Martin[8D]

its a brand new thermostat but I did think that matey am going to change the fan then possibly look at the thermostat :D

Difficult hot starting can be due loss of compression if valve clearences are too tight. Quick job to check those tappets.

thanks Greg :D

Have checked those before taking her out for a run she had idle probs and i did have tight tappets and sorted that

We fitted an electric fan on a manual switch. Just flick it on in traffic and/or hot weather. Thinking of returning to original fixed fan on the KIS principle.:)

Peggy has the standard fan and a Kenlowe fitted. She still suffers from vaporisation but does not overheat.

Peggy's been camping!

If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Thanks for all you input Guys :D

Have any of you tidyed your engine bay up by painting you inlet manifold black ? i have and think it may be soaking up the heat ? might take it off and cover it with heat resistant foil stuff, starting to run out of ideas to be honest

Thanks for reading :I
