rstoration has started

I am well aware of my inferiority compared to you masters in the art of such things so forgive me if I may be stating something obvious.....

have you put the new shoes on in the right order? ie> if you put the leading shoe at the back so to speak, you will def have difficulty putting the drum back on.....feel free to laugh at me, after all I am the resident clown:D:D:D

have you put the new shoes on in the right order?

Yep.shorter lining at the front, think its going to be ok Richies friend John had a peep today and ..well a run up the road and all should be ok ;)
The orignal drums had been down to rivets at some stage so we swopped em for some as good as new ones,so its like having brand new brakes with hardly any adjustment needed by the looks of things.
The headling plastics with the visors is back in,and looks fab to say the least, ive got pictures but havent a c lue how to post so i will just have to send em to Rich to post up:(
Electric fuel pumps wired up (just need a 20 amp fues holder and fuse Rich[8)]) got to do the overdrive switch 2mora and finish the front brakes, then its front spot lamps + wiring/relay + brackets, need an oil temp gauge and holder/pod,reverse lamp, prop shaft should be on its way to be shortened and balanced then its just a few odds and sods + inlet and exhaust manifold 2 fit and make the exhaust system, paint the 4 doors and maybee a bit of a flat and polish (its quite good considering its done in a barn in mid winter, and im realy looking forward to a ride up the road with Rich when its finished)
Be nice meet some of you guys and girls too.

Regards

Richie

a run up the road richie? you'll be lucky u have got another one to do yet lol.
seriously should be running within 2 weeks checked with the dvla the other day and it was last on the road in 93.

its as good as finished, major problem left is the exhaust clearing the alternator and starter motor.we had a new one fabricated but its half an inch out where it goes around the starter motor so weve got to trailer the van to the exhaust manufacturer so they can do it and fit it on site
after all the problems fitting the twin 40s would advise its not worth the trouble, the camper will definetly have twin strombergs or a 28/36 weber

Yeh but you aint heard or drove it yet!! Then you will see and hear that the 40s were worth all the trouble they have caused!;)

Are you using the Holbay 4 branch manifold too - did this cause any issues ?

Looking forward to seeing this van back on the road soon :p

hi paul
yes we are using the holbay 4 branch manifold but its only the face plate left as ive had all the tube cut off and replaced with 1.5 inch bore pipe none of which goes in the original direction. when its fitted and running ill post up some more pics. but may be a week or 2 as its work load dependent to enable us to get the van to the exhaust place.
are you going to be using twin webbers?
rich

Thanks Rich/Steve, looking forward to update & pics [8D]

If only the Holbay manifold plate is useable I'm thinking it might be worth using to cut a template only.

BTW : I'm hoping to use a mildly modified Solex manifold and a Weber 32/36 DGV - all depends whether this arrangement will fit in the Commer bay without to many clearance issues

hi
if your going to be using the weber/solex carb mounting you may be better off using the later mk3+4 vogue/superminx exhaust manifold instead of the holbay as this was a standard rootes conversion and is what ill be putting into dads camper(again holbay powerd) as its a hell of a lot easier to route the pipe as its a simple centre exit twin pipe manifold which should give almost as much freeflow as a holbay when coupled with inch and half or 2 inch pipe. and that conversion does fit into my slightly and easily modified engine bay but am unsure if it would go into a standard commer bay due to the original airfilter panel. also the other problem you'll find is that the carb may sit 2 high for the engine lid to shut i was just going to slightly elongate the sides and raise the lid to compensate for this. if i remember ill take some pics next time im in the shed of the whole thing bolted together as the engines on a pallet to show you.
cheers rich

The only problem with this is the ports on the holbay are so much smaller than the manifolds on the standard 1725 solex manifold, so you have a mega big step on the head when bolting up the only thing to do is port the head to match the manifold;)

i now finally have windows and quarterlights fitted what a pig of a job that is. just gotta get my wheels back from the powder coaters get some tyres on em reattach em to the van and then its off to get the exhaust done and then hopefully mot time.:D

With a cherry on.............................oh no i,ve eaten it :I
