Well I have just got myself a modern car, a 2004 Rover 75 which is supposed to have a BMW engine, pick it up on Friday. I don't know much about them except it looks and sounds nice for a diesel.
I nearly bought a ford mondeo estate but there's definitely something dodgy with it. I went to look at it in Leeds and although there was no reserve the seller had stated that he wanted £2600. I offered £1900 and my renault, anyway to cut a long story short we agreed on £2000 and the renault, deal done and dusted, but then he said he would have to get the renault valetted so he wanted £2050, I said no way. Anyway the mondeo was withdrawn from ebay. It then reappeared and was sold for £2500, end of story, oh no, it appeared again and the second day it went up to £1141 then 3rd day back down to £600, then it went up to £880, then back down to £720. With 5 days to go it has now been withdrawn again. Does anyone else think it sounds like a dodgy deal, glad I went for the rover instead.
 
SO, you managed toy stay off the drugs long enough not to buy a 'Ford Mundane' ...well done! ...as for the Rover ......hmm! for the same money you could of got a nice old 'British' car.....;)

I doubt it, this one cost £1990 and he's taken the renault in part ex for £500.I don't have the space for 3 vehicles so I either stuck with the renault 1600cc petrol and about 26 to gallon or got a diesel about 40 to the gallon and got rid of the renault in exchange so that there is plenty of room for Lulu when she comes home. No only that but I miss driving the fire engines so I wanted something that would react when I put my foot down.
 
And I forgot to mention that they said, when I went for the drugs that someone called Colin from Poole had been and bought the lot.
 
And you were trying to unload that thing onto me - shame on you Les. That's what I call a dodgy deal;)

Whoah Just think John I've been given £500 for the renault without a bent wing so I thought I was doing you a good turn and I didn't mind, too much, being out of pocket with the moggie, you know what I'm like, anything for a friend.

Why oh why buy a Commer then? .....Being as you are a purist, without any mods, I wish you luck.....if ever you get to drive it! ......as much as Woolfy is pressing on with it, there is only so many hours left in a lifetime :D:D

Congratulations, Les. A nice drive, isn't it?

The 2-litre BMW diesel variant is, as far as I can gather, the preferred choice of engine for a lot of people. They generally behave themselves, contrary to MG Rover's own petrols in 4 and 6 cylinder form... Although I have heard that they can develop a chain of issues when they age and get high milages. Best thing is, like always, to keep it serviced regularly by people who knows the cars, in order to avoid surprises.

We bought a 4-cyl. petrol turbo last year, and had 5 full happy weeks with it before we had full drama with engine breakdown - while on holiday - losing headgasket, water in bucketloads, and the whole chebang.. Got it repaired eventually, and had a lot of work done to it this year. I think they drive beautifully and are great cars, and really swap ours for anything right now. But I know that options differ, and there are sound reasons for that too.

Get in touch with someone who can service it and keep an eye on things, that's my advice. That way you will have a nice reliable car for years, I'm sure. There are also good internet forums for these cars, and I've benefited enormously myself from support by fellow forum members.

Looks a nice "modern" Les, but Jostein's estate looks more practical:)

Much better than an old Hunter GT.....................not!
 
Welcome to the 75 club Les I have owned mine for 5 years now, it's got the BMW Diesel Engine.
I have done 100,000 miles in it and it has never let me down, all I have spent on it is servicing parts, tyres and it needed front suspension bushes for last years test. It's a great work horse and a really nice drive but not as nice as my Supermerc:):D

Thanks It's lovely and comfy except for getting in and out where I struggle a bit and I don't think the central locking is working from the key fob and so I have to lock it using the key but I'll take it to David Peel and get them to have a look at it.

It will unlock using the remote function on the key, but not lock it remotely, right?

Check fuse no. 26 (I think it's this one, anyway) under the glove box if that's still intact. It should be an orange 5amp fuse. If that's gone, the central locking won't lock the vehicle using the remote switch - but should still lock all doors if you use the central locking switch inside the vehicle. Also, if that fuse is gone, the immobiliser system won't be activated despite car being locked. There is a red flashing diode in the instrument pack which should flash every now and then when the immobiliser is activated.

Our car was like this when we bought it, and I had big worries about it all - thinking BCM and possibly other things needed changing (expensive). My brother discovered the blown fuse by accident during a routine check of the fuses, and once replaced, everything was working! It should be said that we still have some sort of problem there as the same fuse blew this summer and replacing the fuse just lead to instant blown fuse when I tried to replace it. I left it for a few weeks while pondering on where there may be an electrical shortcut, but before attempting any repairs, I changed the fuse once again - and it didn't blow. So now it has been working for 3 months+ and fingers crossed.. ! ;)

Could of course be some other problem you've got, but check this fuse first. I've later found out that this has happended to quite a few other owners. A friend of mine was trying to repair this on and off for about 18 months until he finally checked that fuse.. and his Rover 75 estate has been fine ever since. :)

Hello Jostein, thank you for the information about the fuses, I was just going to have a look when someone turned up to try and repair my computor which will not update or restore to previous time. He couldn't solve the problem with the computor so I now have 2 problems to try to solve.
 
Hey Jostein, snap! Derv for Chamba. Very underated cars. It was one or these or a Mk.1 Focus for the same money. Given that I've always wanted one it was no competition! It's a bittersweet feeling to be driving one of the last mass produced British designs.
