I did a few things at once. I found a loose connection on a wire linked to the ignition, but that did not solve the problem. The alternator needed rebuilding. I replaced the brushes. One had fallen off it's wire and was possibly out of circuit, or causing a short. I think by that stage the car worked, but was not charging, so I replaced the rectifier, voltage regulator and contact plate. It now works OK. So I think I have a video on how to do that job to save the cost of buying a new or refurbished alternator. But there are lots of other videos on how to do that.
