The government are introducing legislation in parliament today to make changes to the requirement of Vehicles over 40 years old to require an MOT test.

Also, substantial changes have been made to the classification of vehicles that have been "substantially changed", (since 1988) which now includes a limit of 15% increase in the power to weight ratio of the vehicle.

Full document is here for the power to weight stuff

Thought it was only wierd vehicles like tanks, recovery vehicles etc. Does that mean even though my battle bus, 1972, has a mot it doesn't leagaly need one. I imaging if it is tested then law applies. I would still have a chech once a year or crash and burn

The last owner had to put a switch in the dashboard as the original screen washer didn't pump fast enough:(.things like brakes, chassis etc etc I fully agree with

Thanks for that Panky. Very interesting.
My T25 will be an interesting case when it comes to be 40 years old in 2025.
I changed the engine from 49bhp (!) to 63bhp (still not a lot) because it was chronically underpowered and unsafe. That's a 28% increase, so will still need testing. But the standard engine for that identical chassis was 78bhp, and the model was fitted as standard with engines up to 94bhp. Therefore it still has much less power than the vehicle was designed for. Other than that it is bog standard.

Interesting, if a vehicle is MOT exempt and a voluntary test is undertaken then does that go on it's MOT history or will all all over forty year old vehicles be wiped off the system - and can a valid ticket actually be issued or will we get some sort of inspection report.

The MoT test procedure is all computerised now so hopefully the admin will remain the same if you do submit for a test. When inputting the reg no of your vehicle the computer will probably throw up a message stating the test is not mandatory and offer a 'continue' or 'cancel' option?

I’ve signed up for that mot reminder so I suppose that will tell me in June. Or if it’s like the WARP computer it will just nuke something
