Road trip

Once the engine rebuild is complete..ahem, overdrive fitted etc etc
We are rethinking our annual trip to newquay and devon for May spring bank, and are thinking of going further afield.
We would like to do a European 2 week trip.
One of the options is to get a ferry from plymouth to ntander, bilbao, and drive up through France.
Has anyone undertook a trip like this and can recommend a rough itineray?
We would also consider a trip round nothern europe, or even scandanavia.
Any suggestions?

I can't really comment on the continental routes - but am sure others can.

But I just wanted to say that I took my Bluebird Highwayman from Martin's down to Harwich last autumn, ferried to Esbjerg in Denmark with DFDS, then drove some gorgeous routes in Denmark up to the northern end - and catching the Stena Line ferry from Frederikshavn (Denmark) to Oslo (Norway). It was easy and trouble free.

And from Denmark there are a lot of ferry routes to various destinations in southern Norway, or to destinations on Sweden's western coast.

The fares do pick up during May, so is advisable to check the prices early - and probably also to book early. Prices are ridiculously expensive during June, July and early August. We've just been on camping holiday in Denmark involving two ferry crossings (Norway to Denmark + Denmark to Norway), and it did cost a lot. We used Stena Line to Denmark and Color Line back, but they all push the prices up beyond belief during the regular holiday season.

The crossing from England to Denmark is by far the most expensive, probably as there is no competition on that particular route.. [!]

Hi Nick.
I used to live in Spain and spent quite a bit of time in Galicia in the north. It's a beautiful part of the country, cold in the winter but like a hot Wales in the summer. Lots of mountain roads and rivers to swim in, and a lot of it is still rural and unspoilt.
If you decide to take a ferry to Bilbao, i'd recommend driving along the coast to Santiago de Compostela, and then heading back cross country to the border if you wanted to drive up through France.
I've always found the Spanish to be a friendly, welcoming lot, and the ones in Galicia especially so.
Whatever you decide, hope it goes well.
