Reversing lamp....

Does anyone know if there is any legislation on the type of lamp that can be used?? I have a spare white spotlamp I was thinking of using...is this ok or does it have to be a certain lamp??

Don,t think there is any issues with reversing lamps Colin, use what you like ;)

I have a feeling that it can only go on when you engage reverse gear and should go out when you disengage reverse, but you should check.

yes i know that..it is wired to a switch on the gearbox so will only come on when reverse is selected:)

Which brings me to the next problem:D....

Ok, so i wired into the the fusebox so i only have 'live' when ignition switched on...through an inline fuse (20amp) to the switch on gearbox.....from there to the lamp and from lamp to earth!.....thing is there's only 8 volts reaching the lamp!.....any ideas???...the cable I used should be ample for the purpose..

sounds silly but try a better earth m8. can make a world of differance. otherwise it could be a faulty reverse switch or possibly dirty terminals. could try taking the sitch out and cleaning it all up inside (assuming you didnt do that already lol)

The switch was all cleaned up recently and all terminals are new...the earth is attached to the chassis in a freshly drilled hole...however I will double check it all again:)

when i put dollies 1 on i drilled a fresh hole but it wouldnt work, so i took off a bit of paint around the whole and bolted the earth up then painted over the bolt to stop water getting in. works a treat now (although its on a dash mounted manual switch atm) might help with yours m8

Ok, so took the switch off, took it apart and cleaned it...

at the switch, with it in reverse, i get 12volts going into switch and 12volts coming out of switch..............until.....the second i connect the cable to the light, then the meter shows 0.00 ????????????...if i bypass the switch the lamp works...i know its probably something simple but its driving me nuts...help please

when you bypassed the switch, did you do it by using a new piece of wire or did you just disconnect the in and out on the switch and join them together?

so that means the wiring doesnt have a break in it if it comes on when bypassed. also surgests that your earth is fine. i would say that you need a new switch m8. sounds like the switch is failing under load:( works fine when not attached but when the light is connected it cant handle the current. may be i good idea to try a less powerfull light though. if its a spotlight it may be more than the switch can handle? but thats just an idea;):I

yep, wiring all new and i downgraded the bulb from 100w to 50w ...internally the switch has 2 springs, one of which was broken so I stretched the remainder which appears to work fine with just the meter on it so I guess you could be right and it just cant cope under load....£8.50 from speedyspares + postage so will try my local motor factors first in the morning:)

on the brightside if everything else works at least you can be pretty confidant that a new switch will sort it m8. i need to get 1 for dolly as i hate having it on a switch. i will most probably forget it every time i reverse lol

take no notice of the blue lines lol...it looks like this and its on the passenger side of gearbox

inhibitor001-1.jpg

this one is on drivers side as its an inhibitor switch for overdrive but they are the same swtch...if your o/drive is J-type then there may be a blanking bolt where the switch goes...if its a D-type then there is nowhere to fit the switch:)

i bet any money it a d type then haha will have a look at my pics to see if i can spot it or if not i'll check tomoz lol. do they just wind in like a bolt then?
