Reverse gear...???

As a few know, I have fitted a o/d gearbox... but it had a crack on the casing. I have managed to repair that an i no longers leaks. The only problem I have now is that on taking her out of the garage this afternoon I could not find reverse!?!?![:0]

Q.How do i go about adjusting the new box/lever/linkage or whatever to try to allow my gearstick to find reverse gear??? - or do i have more serious problems!!

Thanks

Hi Ray. Just needs the gear linkages setting up correctly. I have the tools to do it, I can post them down. Email me your details ;)

Or you could try adjusting the selector linkage, the one that has a nylon ball joint at either end on top of the gearbox. Try screwing it in a couple of turns and see what happens.

It might be that your linkage is well worn if you put a jubilee clip on the short shaft that pivits on the part where it passes through the body work.Make sure the shaft is far over to the drivers side and clap it up.It takes all the slopy play out the linkage. Will se if i can take a pic as ive done it on one of my vans.;)

Had a play with the nylon ball joint as you suggested Panky... Can now get 3rd,4th and reverse, but no 1st or 2nd yet...??? Been fiddling with it all morning!! If I lengthen the arm too much I lose reverse... shorten it and I only get reverse!!

Could this have something to do with my o/d I have just fitted?? Solenoid wiring or sticking??

Will just have to wait for Martins special setting tool I s'pose.

Difficult to get it just right, sent them this morning, so you'll just have to be patient ;)

Nothing better than a 'fiddle' Ray lol....I couldn't get 4th and after laying on my back and 'fiddling' for a while I managed to find just the spot and now everything is wonderful! :D:D

Nothing to do with the OD but the selectors may be set differently or worn. Martins tools should sort you out but if all else fails then you may need to attach the OD unit to your original box.

[:0][:0] that drastic? I'm assuming you could get all gears before the swap? lets hope Martins magic tool sorts the issue

I would try every other angle before taking the box out again, go over every nut & bolt with a fine toothcomb checking they are all nice & tight and no bolts are loose or thread stripped and coming loose....when you were trying to adjust the linkage ,how many turns were you advancing/retarding?? it is suprising how much just 1 turn makes, considering how sloppy it all seems..

All sorted.... well not quite, still can't get o/d to engage. But that appears to be a wiring issue.

MM's tool did the job, although a job that probably should take an hour took me 4!! - till 12midnight last night!! Wasn't going to bed till it was done. Eventually took Wilma for test drive at 12.15am! - had to be done though!

The tool was ideal... it did the trick as far as getting the 2 linkages perfectly alligned, unfortunately the real problem I had was the fact that the top linkage adjustment (not the nylon ball-joint rod) was siezed which was the main reason for no 1st or 2nd gears being available!! - So had to take the top section off the gearbox and free it all up... which took awhile. Anyway, been out again tonight and all seems ok. Just need to get the wiring sorted now and enjoy the real reason for the whole exercise... THE OVERDRIVE!

Many thanks again Martin, will get the Churchill tool off in the post to you tomorrow.

Great news Ray, that first time you switch the overdrive on and it works is kind of magical and all the hard work and bruised knuckles is well worthwhile[8D]

any chance of a pic of the magic tool and the instructions? I've had my linkage in bits and its probably a long way out (3rd is optional....)

Rupert

Ray - have you got the electrics sorted yet?

NO!!??!!?!? - mate.

Glad you have posted... am at a loss at what to try next??? I have double/triple checked the wiring, the linkages etc and i cannot get the o/d to work.... Can't get power down to the solenoid. (Which i have checked and adjusted, and it does work). The whole thing is doing my bloody 'ead in!

I have power to the relay from the various wires that connect to it.... but nothing on the feed to the solenoid when selecting 3d/4th??

The tool by the way, was most useful. It set everything up spot on. Although my main problem was the top selector arm was seized, so could only select 3rd/4th and reverse... The tool basically locks your gear stick in neutral and another key (but you could use a drill bit) locks the top selector arm.... you then just adjust the nylon ball-joint arm so that it drops on easily both ends, and the other bolt and pin type connector so that it is not straining as you bolt together... simple.

No doubt MM would lend you the tool if you wanted to use it...???
