Removing stat housing

I cannot get the thermostat housing of my spare engine to fit to Babs. Unfortunately, on the sceptre engine, it is fitted on studs, rather than bolts with the commer. I cannot get the studs out and cannot seem to shift the thermo housing at all. Any ideas as to how I might get it off as I want to use the commer next week for a trip up north.

All I can suggest is lots of WD40, gentle tapping with a mallet and if that fails warm around the studs with a blow lamp and more tapping.

Hi Andy, I would offer to pop over and help (well, stand around and point a lot) but I've been on 4 o'clock starts this week (last one tomorrow) so need to get to sleep early. I'm on late shifts for the rest of the year though, actually got a day off on Sunday when I'm having visitors so basically no rest until 2010!

Thanks for the hints. I shall try them next week, once the festivities are over. If I cannot get it off - I shall take the head off, soak it in my parts tank for a couple of weeks and then clamp the thermostat housing in the vice and wiggle the head until movement occurs.

Baz, no worries - I am sure you have enough to be getting on with. Maybe in 2010, you'd like to come and help me finish scraping the underseal off the stiletto - which is proving to be slow progress at the moment.

Sounds like fun! We can drown Peggy in anti-rust stuff too.
