Removing impeller from water pump

Ey up,

I'm fitting an electric water pump to my engine so I'm after removing the impeller from my original pump. Is there anybody on here that fancies doing it? I'll pay, obviously.
I don't know how to do it and I don't really have the time if I did magic some skills out of thin air.

Cheers

Your best plan is to get it welded up to do away with the impeller and shaft completely, Tim (commeracer) did mine for me a few years back.
Have you worked out the heater system is going to work? you will need to move the pipe that usually goes to the existing pump to the suction of the electric pump, otherwise there will be no flow though the heater. If you need any help give me a shout and I can provide pictures.

Very helpful thanks. Trouble is you are unlikely to press the spindle off the impeller without damaging the seal hence my suggestion of getting it welded up. I did try it once and ended up smash the impeller - I was using a big hammer and drift though:rolleyes:

Didn’t you use an adjustible hammer? I’ve not really looked at the pump before. Is the whole thing bolted onto the engine with some holes in the block for water flow or is it burried in it. Also what gets welded up?

When fitting an electric pump the case of the old one is just used as an elbow from the outlet of the electric pump into the engine. The shaft is removed and the hole it leaves in the casting is blocked off - so is the heater hose connection.

Bit difficult to see but this is the electric pump in place and the outlet from this connects to the inlet of the old pump. Th blue 'T' piece is there to allow the heater return to be drawn into the pump suction.

Were you using a metric hammer?

Used to run my Imp Sport with an electric pump, once set up it worked well. It's next incarnation is going to be BMW powered so will use the BMW pump.

If you remove the shaft completely you'll need a shorter V belt and an electric fan. I personally would just cut the vanes off the old pump if it's possible.

Cheers Panky, that's spot on, ta. I thought about trying to cut off the impeller and leaving the rest but I've already got the electric fan, so it's just a case of sorting the belt. Ta
