Removing Crank Pulley

Can someone tell me the size of deep socket that I will need to remove the crank pulley? It has a starting handle attachement that I cannot get a socket onto - and therefore don't know the size.

I used a dirty big ring spanner:I - I'll check the size next time I'm in there.

Been dismantling my Sceptre engine today - and I cannot get the pulley off, or the thermostat housing.....

Ho hum
 
Well, just measured the nut - and I think it is the very common size of 1 5/16th AF. Not got one of those - oh dear. Is that the right size Panky?
 
Hi Andy, the spanner I used was and old one from my days as a fitter - its 3/4 Whitworth (shows how long ago it was when I was on the tools:I). Its a wee bit slack but it did the job with a 2lb hammer for assistance.

well, the 1 1/4 is too small, and the 1 & 5/16 is a little larger than the 3/4W. The only one between the 2 is 32mm. Shame I don't have any other deep sockets. It's probably something wierd - hence the churchill tool.

Well, I have ordered a socket from ebay.

The thermo housing is now toast. I will have to cut it off the head and get the engine man to get the remains of the studs out.
 
32mm sounds right, one of the old fashioned box spanners with a big tommy bar would do ;)

if you take the starter out there is a hole somewhere on the flywheel that you can ram a screwdriver in to lock it. Means you can then apply a bit more force to the breaker bar...

it'll then suddenly come loose and you'll cut your knuckles and make a hole in your rad.

Why o why did I use so much loctite. doh.
 
Well, I have a battery impact wrench which should not need to have the crank locked - but I do have the sump off, so I can stick a bit of wood down the side of the block so the crank cannot revolve......

Just waiting for the socket

Socket arrived this morning. Hopefully it will fit. It's a nice 3/4 socket - which I have a lovely large 1m tall torque wrench to get it off with (which is usually only used to torque up Imp rear wheel bearings - so now its usefulness has been doubled.
 
Well, success!

Already bead blasted and ready for refitting.

However, deffo not 32mm. that size spanner just won't fit
 
32 is too tight, 33 slightly slack, so probably 32.5mm :I

1 1/4" which is I think was a fairly common size for BMC/Austin/Triumph crank nuts

Nah!!!

It's a 1 5/16th. I tried 1 1/4 - too small. :D
 
I had the same problem on a Bedford CA with a starting handle dog, I found a nice pair of Stilsons did the job a treat.:D:D
