registration number query

i have done a dvla data check on a commer van first registered to my dad in 1975 and it states that it was last taxed in july 1983,my question is, as it is still on there data base i presume that it still survives somewhere. so is there a way off finding this out so i may be able to purchase the registration number[?] hope that did,nt bore you to much;)

It only means it was last taxed in '83. There was no tight restrictions on scrapping in those days, so many vehicles were scrapped and not notified. It may be out there somewhere, but chances are, it's gone to Commer heaven [V]

I think he means that the reg would be available as it is not shown to be on a recently sorn'd / taxed vehicle, regardless of whether the van has survived or not ?? Am I right??

thanks martin:) is there no way in finding out what happened to the reg number as it cannot be used on another vehicle because it would come up on the dvla wound,nt it[?]:(

well, just explain that the van has sentimentel value and they may help you, if you just ask if the number is available, they can only say yes or no:)

swansea i should think mate

There is a bit on their website that you can send a enquiry but I did that and didn't get a reply:( can't remember if there is a phone number If you write it may be worth putting an sae in and ask nicely for a reply?

You can fill in a form to request details, they do make a charge and it's not guaranteed they will tell you. They don't normally sell registrations on request ;)

If you do request a registration, it will be put into an auction and you will have to bid for it - with the reserve set at £300, and about £100 of vat & costs to pay on top of that if you secure it.

Thats quite a bit for a registration, and then someone else might go for it so the price may go up more I suppose.

kjh;)

i have had a reply from dvla and what i would need to do if i wanted the reg number is, first of all buy the vehicle to which it is registered to then put the vehicle into a road worthy condition in where it passes a mot, tax the vehicle and when all this has been done i can transfer the plate[V]for me to do this i have to find the vehicle to which they cannot give me the information:(
