Rear Step

Hi Guys,
merry christmas to you all! With having a little time off I thought I'd have a go at some of the jobs I'd not got round to. one of these was fixing the rear step. Now I know I have asked about this before (and CommerChris was kind enough to post some photos) but I can't find the thread so I thought I'd start another.

the story is that before I got Jessica, she had a little mishap and the people repairing her took the bumper off - with an angle grinder. I'm trying to repair it so I can use it as a step and also as a tow bar.

from Chris's previous post, it sounds as through the bits which have been cut off should extend to the bolts to the whole thing is a bit more robust.

so my thought is to weld some sections on to the stumps in the picture. Problem is I can't figure how I would manage to fit it! with one pair of brackets going under the rear panel and the other pair going through it.

any ideas?

ooh I've had a thought (which is surprising in itself...) is the bit that got chopped off shorter than the other one? and could it only have one hole in ?

Harvey's step brackets look to be the same as Jess's.

The bit that has been cut off is the bumper iron, it's not attached to the step and doesn't help to support it but the step brackets use the same bolt holes.

I think more substantial ironwork would be needed for a tow bar:I

Thanks Panky that was just what I needed! However I'm even more confused now! The bumper irons and step are all one assembly. Maybe there has been some creativity in the past to weld it all together. I'll have a little think.

Re:the tow bar, the step has a tow bar mount so I assumed it was ok. Oh dear!

One more question. I'm guessing there isn't a little bar in each side attaching the bumper to the step?

No there's nothing connecting the bumper irons to the step frame on Harvey. It does sound like someone has attempted to beef things up on Jess for the tow bar, but welding the bumper irons to the rear valance doesn't suggest they knew what they where doing:I
1" angle iron is a bit lightweight for a tow bar I think[xx(]

I'm all about the safety me. I'd only popped to the garage to take the photo!

Hopefully I'll get a chance to get the grinder out tomorrow. Don't want to piss off the new neighbours too much.
