Rear Shocks

Can,t be too difficult, and a big leap forward i would think :)

hopefutlly not a big leap forward - dodgy shocks if it is!

commers have lever arm shocks on the back don't they? so do morris minors - well mine did before I fitted telescopics. I used a kit but it would be really easy to make something similar I'm sure. The only parameters would be (probably) the spring rate, and the required length.

Proably need a new spring mount plate with a bar on it for one end of the shock. then something to mount to the van floor the minor kit I have used a length of u shaped steel bolted to the floor. Easy peasy.

Its just a matter of making suitable mounts for either end of the shock, no springs involved ;) unless its a coilover set-up, then its a 5 link job :p

I am going to convert to telescopic dampers (especially as I have discovered there are no new lever arm types or seal kits for them...) Just got to design, fabricate & fit a bracket & get an MOT before we go camping in Holland on Friday for the long weekend..[B)]
Will also have to consult a few manuals to find which shocks are short enough (Imp, Mini ?) but also beefy enough (not Imp, Mini...)

Thanks Martin, but new seals arent available and I dont fancy NOS seals which will have weak rubber which wont last long. And Im well on the way with conversion to a decent telescopic set-up.

6 fabricated brackets later and much time on the phone with shocks manufacturer to find length, pressure and recoil rate and its done. Works a treat. Fast (especially fast and bumpy) corners used to scare me a bit, but the van takes them beautifully now.

Have you took the leaf springs off the back ? And just shocks ? So you can drop the back ?

If he took the springs off the van would just settle onto the bump stops and definitely would not handle well at all.

Was just considering some new old stock Armstrong dampers but this sounds more interesting. Does any body know what would be a good price for the nos ones[?]
