quick question re handbrake

hi there, how are you all doing? work on our commer is going well so far but i have a question. is it usual for the brake lights to come on when the handbrake is applied?!? this seems rather odd to me.
if this isn't normal, any idea why it might be happening?!?

This is normal. If you look under the van, where the cables meet, there is a small box, attatched by a chain/spring to the linkage. This is the switch. They often seize up and get forgotten about.
At first I thought this was just PO spec, but it appears to be on most vans.

Martin is correct, as the one on my highwayman needed renewing as it had seized.
