Propshaft question - BMM?

Hi Ray

I'd say (from the pics) to ditch the one on the new box and use all of the linkage that is on the van at the moment, as you know it works!

Sorry I've not been around for a while. The laptop decided to not respond to half of the keys on the keyboard?!

if its whats called the adaptor plate to main casing fitted together with 8 bolts then there is a gasket between them, dont know what its made of but its p/no k25638
id consider changing the oil seal and bush at the end of the rear casing as these can get damaged when inserting the prop and drip oil everywhere
ive had a look in my parts book and the solenoid seems to be the same on all the gearboxes with the fine spline p/no 5039747 type 11s
i think the 11s is a lucas reference
the gearbox overdrive switch and the gearbox reversing light switch are the same part j type is ref 141sa p/no 71801170
d type seems to be type ss10 p/np 1800253
also on the od box on the nearside is a little rectangular plate that holds in the filter that also has a gasket and can leak p/no k 25619
the overdrive relay from speedys is p/no 1800385 and the od selector switch fitted to the dash is p/no 71260840
if i get chance next week i will try and post pictures of a gearbox with j type and one with d type and aldo a commer gearbox
as always its best to check with speedys and if possible give them the details on the overdrive unit that appear on the plate riveted to the unit

Thanks Steve:D[8D]

Mine has a slight leak here, is it a relatively easy job to do?

looks like i will be ringing Speedy's monday for a seal and solenoid

I am wondering if i have wired it up right because Steve mentioned about a revesing switch....hmmm! i wired it up exactly the same as it came from Bluebell...that doesn't make it right i spose...

Try running a live straight from the battery to test the solenoid. If it works then check the wiring before you buy another solenoid.

Thanks Panky for stating the obvious....I had overlooked that DURRR at me:I

I saw someone friday who has an old Triumpth Bonnie and he was saying that he had gone out and bought a new battery because it would not start, the new battery was fully charged. he couldn't work out why it would start if he put his charge & start on it....i pointed the obvious to him, to check where the battery earthed to the frame. he cleaned it up and it burst into life:D he simply over looked it..

great this forum:D:D

Hi Rupert,
Yes that sounds right, i was gonna do that, but could not easily get the linkages off the old one...? I am hoping to put a few hours in this afternoon, so we will see. Will be in touch.

Thanks for all that info and advice Steve. Been on to Speedies and ordered loads of bits and bobs... including a new D type solenoid.

Watch this space!

Now I've finally had some time, I have removed the existing gearbox and bellhousing. All straight forward stuff. The questions I have now are:

Q1. Once shortened, will my existing propshaft spline fit straight into a 'd' type o/d unit? I offered it up and it did seem to want to fit (needs to be cleaned thoroughly first) but I want to know from someone who knows before I attempt to fit it properly?
Q2. What is the electrical plug on the top plate of the o/d unit? It has 2no. spade connectors?

Cheers guys.

Reverse switch? - are you sure...? Had a reverse switch on the existing non-o/d gearbox, it wasn't in the same place though??

Well, so i'm told, there is only that switch and the solonoid on the drivers side...mine is the J type, unless your D type is much different:)

There can be two switches opposite each other on the gearbox - doesn't matter which type of OD. The drivers side it the OD inhibitor switch, the other one is a reversing light switch. Not normally fitted to a Commer but the same box was fitted to many Rootes cars, there are usually blanking plugs filling the holes on the vans.
Check the number of splines on the g'box output shaft and make sure they are the same as the prop. I think there are two types but the difference is quite obvious as the splines are either big and few of them or fine and a lot of them.

So can you tell me
A/ what does the inhibiter switch do?

B/ what does the reverse switch do?

C/ What does the solonoid do?

The inhibitor switch stops you engaging the o/d in 1st/2nd and reverse, to stop you trashing it.
the reverse switch is to give you reversing lights
the solenoid is an electromgnetic switch to engage the o/d

just been reading up... (BMM blog..)

this is the overdrive lock out (inhibitor) I assume to avoid use in 1st and 2nd??

reverse switch activates reverse lights i would think?

solenoid engages o/d in 3rd or 4th?

thanks Panky... think it will fit then.

While I wait for Royal Mail to deliver my o/d parts... I decided to fit my new electric oil and temp gauges.

Q. Which is the best 'ignition' activated live to connect to? and what colour is it?

Ray

Probably off the fuse box, can't tell what colour - they've all been sprayed white:I
Put a test lamp on the terminal and see if it comes live just with ignition on.
