I once worked on one of these:

also based on a LR Forward control and V8.... never drove a more amazing vehicle in my life.

if I didn't have enough vehicles I can sleep in, a forward control is top of the list, or a landrover ambulance!
But what I would love if retired and heading to the wilderness is my parents' neighbour's vehicle

That Volvo "all terrain" vehicle used to be a very familiar sight on Norwegian roads in the past, and you still see the odd one around today.

The Norwegian army used these in the 60s and 70s, and I don't think they retired the last ones until the 90s. There used to be hordes of them, some closed vehicles, some open with a canopy, some field ambulances, some towing vehicles.. you get the picture. Many were auctioned off when the army disposed of them, and you could pick one up for a song if you were lucky. Pretty much indestructible, I understand, but narrow track width while pretty tall made them a bit unstable off road. Not prone to topple over, exactly, but you had to watch it.

An interesting footnote is that the vehicle which succeeded the Volvo "Felt" as it was called, was the series 2 Land Rover 109'. The Norwegian army bought masses of them - thousands probably - in the mid-70s. But they quickly got a reputation for being terrible on the road, and had a turning circle from hell. What most people didn't know was that one condition for the Ministry of Defence was that the Land Rovers should use the old wheels and tyres off the Volvo Felts - clearly to save money and squeeze out whatever possible in pretty tight budgets. Problem was that the Volvo wheels were too big, and even if they got the wheels to fit on the LR hubs, the LRs became pretty much undriveable. Add to that the fact that military service was compulsory for all male Norwegians from the age of 19, and the fact that most of these would be using the army LRs loads, no wonder the Land Rover got a reputation in this country for being "just crap". If only they had known..

Another Volvo Felt for sale here, but yours for 1500 quid this time ;)
