Power Rangers - Operation Overdrive

Its worth the hassle, although I seem to have encountered more problems than most with the linkage.
Are you shaving the flywheel BMM?

The mounting is the next facinating installment. Shouldn't be too long now (I've said that before ;) )I'm planning on having some fun with the electrickery soon. Stay tuned!

That gearbox is soooo heavy. I'm going to have lots of fun fitting it.

Now I need to get it all back together pretty quick so I can go and pick up my lovely trailer!

i must be lucky i must of known previous owner swung the sale with sexy over drive shiny switch i knew it would come in use-full:D
 
got tow bar too,, must of had loads of optional xtras fitted from new ,, wow it just gets better must be pushing that 2.99 price tag:D
 
I think some commers came with overdrives. (some parts of hte system are on the speedy spares commer price list) but certainly not that many. The other thing is the standard Rootes 1725 overdrive gearbox can be fitted (in its various guises). The "car" version has a longer bellhousing and overdrive adaptor, so the mount needs to be modified a fair bit. There are quite a few other considerations, like the speedo cable length and the prop-shaft length, but its all do-able. They are available too, I think some Rootes parts suppliers have them in stock.

I'm not an expert, but I'm trying!

seriously as far as i know over drive fitted std on dormobile1725cc fitted new speedo cable from speedy spares so it must be std length, why adjust prop,,1971 commer iwonder because we were told carb was non std ,as it was restricted is this norm since got new carb but yet to road test....
 
Nice work Rupert. Once I've finished Harvey's lobotomy and general nips and tucks the engine and OD is the next thing on the list. Prepare to be copied unmercifully - as long as it works [}:)]

lightening the flywheel will help the engine spin up in the lower gears at the expense of engine braking, probably not worth it on a commer but if you want it done ,send it this way :)

Probably not, but once done its free power. The flywheel which came out of my Holbay Rapier was not an alloy one but was significantly lighter than the Commer one.

I never realised this [B)] I used the bigger of the 2 bellhousings in order to use the bigger clutch. And managed to snap it anyway[B)]

hello all!

the overdrive project is coming on slowly,

The box is all nice and clean and painted now


(please excuse the van being used as shed)

I've had a play with the electrical system,

got it all running as it should in the end, however I did come across a couple of problems

first, the earth on the relay direct drive connection (W1) needs to have a resistor in line (I used a bolt!) to get the switch to turn off properly. Anyone got any idea what the resistance should be?

second, the overdrive solenoid makes a satisfying clunk sound, but it is when the switch is turned off... is this right?

ooops! really sorry! Yeah it came ages ago!

I've put the carb on it and its looking good (no choke arm on the carb though[}:)][}:)])

I'm going to wait until Jessica is on the road and working again before I go and break her again!

I still need to fit the starter etc, but there is a gearbox under Jessica and it isn't being held up by magic (that'll be the mount wot I made myself!)

I know progress is slow on this project, but I'm only getting to work on her for about 1 1/2 - 2 hours a night 4 times a week!

If there is any interest I can write up all the fun I've been having as a quick reference document
