Perhaps I can give you the child's perspective. As a child, I was one of three children and we would all go on holiday in our Commer in the late 1960's for four weeks at a time or more (both parents being teachers). Our van was a Wanderer with 5 beds, but the space was the same. As we grew bigger, we children transferred to a tent, but as a family living in such confines we learnt to get along and although we are now scattered around the country we remain close. We got to see places we would never otherwise see (including places where we broke down). They are memories I will always treasure and are the prime reason I joined this forum.

So there you go, you owe it to your children to keep Wilma. ;)

How right you are, Renaultvation!
These childhood memories from car-holiday with mum and dad and brothers/sisters were priceless. We didn't have a Commer (had an 1969 Opel Kadett and a funky brown and orange family tent) but the principle is still the same. True family values which often are forgotten today, I think. All the more important that the Commerunity keeps up the tradition :)

I'd forgotten about the colour of the tents! Ours was orange and blue (my parents still have it in their barn somewhere complete with homemade attachment to fit back of Commer). They all seemed to have a combination which included orange.

Hi Guys,

Not been able to get to the PC for a few days...but am seriously touched by all the kind suggestions and comments! - Really!:I

I know you are all right in many ways, and no doubt Edward will go mental when he gets older and found out I sold the Commer. (I still have to show him the photo's of my Lotus Esprit I parted with 12 months ago! - at least i have some photo's of him sat in it i s'pose.)

Some of the ideas from BMM,C'Chris,Racer and others need exploring, so no rush to sell. Spring would be the best time anyway, if I am to get the best price for her.

Now she's back on the road, perhaps we will fall in love again! :pThanks for jogging my memory Panky!! - damn!

Happy Christmas everyone.

Hi razor. As i said earlier yours is the sort of van i will be looking for soon. I know your not sure if your selling yet but would it be possible for you to email me with am idea of what sort of money you would asking... It would give me am idea of whether i could afford the sort of van id like.

Thanks mate.

Hi Razor, this is Mrs Charlie Commer and baby Lauren, we are most definately not up for swapping! Bad suggestion by my husband who should actually be working or so he tells me thats where he is! :) Don't go selling the van take these good people up on their offers of help and ideas and enjoy some good meets next year. No holiday is fun if it rains no matter what you are staying in and just think of the commer-dy value of being in Wilma!:I:D Sorry my humour hasn't got any better after baby. Anyway welcome to Nurdis and Merry Christmas to all x x x x

It's ok CC we have 2 babies already! - so no swapping. Will have to wait and see, like I said no rush. She is safely tucked up in the garage.

am sure all the forum regulars know that Wilma one of the best available - and there will be many that gladly part with limbs to own her, we just don't want you to do anything you might regret as she's so good that it's difficult to imagine parting with something that special. Have enjoyed hearing of your adventures together and kinda hope there'll be more but am sure there will be a big bunfight over Wilma if you decide that space really is going to be a problem.

No. We'd be mad to. And you'd be mad to sell it! [:(!]

That said, where did you get your "tiled" lino floor from? I have thought about fitting a more "stylish" lino floor to my Highwayman, and yours is the best I've seen so far (been looking at your floor frequently for over a year now, so this is no rushed decision;)). The original mid-60s grey Highwayman lino is very ordinary and quite boring to be frank. Your tiled pattern, however, is very nice in the way it still is very light by not having the big black squares, and also looks really good.

Also, did you remove the lower cupboards before fitting it, or did you just cut it to fit along the edges? I bet you removed the whole interior before fitting.. judging by the impressive attention to detail in your work on this camper. :p

I think you may have gathered from the replies that everyone is interested, we're just trying to knock the price down[}:)].
I wonder how much I'd get for a kidney, not much with all the red wine that been flushed through them:I

Hi Commernuts,

I always get a bit annoyed when i read about Commers that might be for sale and then when it comes to it, the owner changes their mind....however.....due to the fact we now have a 2 year old and a new born baby, I am seriously thinking of selling the Commer, Wilma. She is featured on members vans (read it and get back to me) and is in really decent nick I think. I haven't seen a better one yet. I have just replaced her head gasket last week. I don't wish to mess anybody around, however for the right price we may just part with her in the New Year/ springtime. It will absolutely break my heart if we do, but with 4 of us we need more room really.

Thanks for reading.

Jostein - I just neatly cut the vinyl around the units. It took a while, but if you trim it back bit by bit it should go in ok. I think it looks a bit 1960's and gives an easy clean finish. I then put some silicon sealant around the edges to avoid it lifting or getting moisture underneath.

Well will see what happens after Christmas. I still have the O/D unit to fit yet. So that will me interesting.

OPERATION OVERDRIVE!

mine overdrive project is starting to start.... I'll post some piccies when i get cracking...

need to swap the main gearbox shaft first though[V]

Razor untill I bought Dora (original thought was just to rescue from the scrapyard)I did not know what the apeal was. But since she has been on the road sold modern car and drive her daily to and from work,
She keeps up with modern trafic (a bit scarey if you have to brake in an emergency) and a pleasure to drive even on frosty mornings. Heads alvays turning when cars pass (trying to see what she is).
Yours is one of the better looking vans amd I sure that you and your children will have fond thoughts of happy camping holidys (we tend to forget the ones when it rains ) with a few adaptions you can make it suitable for children (I was impresed what Will had done to his Van at the spring meet to acommidate his children). Have a good think (come to your sences)keep the van and look forward to happy camping (three mounths and counting spring again):D

thanks macker. Ok, ok, looks like you are all talking me into being one of those annoying people i mentioned at the beginning of this thread who changes their mind on selling!!

That said, we will see what happens in the new year. i know people are a bit strapped for cash at the moment!

Right BMM, Let's do the O/D at the same time...?? don't s'pose i'll start until mid-jan 09, but will let you know when i do. Also, I liked that front bunk for the cab you showed me?

Well said, Martin ! [^]

Razor,
thanks for the instructions on the lino fitting :) Was that lino pattern easy to get hold of, of did you have to source it from somewhere special?

Hi Jostein, got it local at Trago Mills! - anybody who knows the southwest has heard of Trago! They sell practically anything you care to name. Just bought it off the roll. Like I said it was a classic pattern from the 60's/70's. Must be available anywhere i would have thought.

Martin, the main man! - I'm sniffing the worm!!?? Does this bunk fit ok? and how much would you like for it? Talking to Kerrie, we will certainly give it another go this Summer. What with a few improvements, o/d, bunk etc. it may make things alot better. And of course making the next meet would be nice.

Take care, Ray
