petrol tank troubles

Currently having some intermittent petrol supply problems which we think is some floaty crud in the petrol tank.
Have gone though rest of petrol supply system and seems clear, just occasionally runs out of puff on our steep welsh hills - fuel in carb gets very low and takes a while to fill up, but only under load and then only intermittent, pulling over and letting more fuel catch up helps.

Best guess is something floating[xx(] in tank is getting sucked into intake once in a while.
Does this sound possible and how bad a job is getting tank off[?]

Possible but it's more likey that the pump is not effective as it use to be. Worth checking tank first thou. Tank quite easy to come out when near empty as long as your filler pipe is still supple else you might split taking it off the tank. Speedy's do a replacement for about £17.
As for pump i'm planning on swaping to electric so the carb is always well primed in the mornings to help the starting.

I had small bits, like flakes of paint in the pickup. Tahk drops out easily with approx half a dozen bolts, just watch the breather pipe up to the filler neck and the flex (if it still does) filler hose.

Stupid design that, flex filler hose that when punctured or rotted, lets all the fuel run out of the tank [:(!]

Yup, first van did that - woke up in the morning with strong smell of petrol and the most expensive chemical crystal I ever saw where it had been dripping out all night on same spot on the ground and had formed very pretty stalagmite [xx(]

I had a different problem with my first camper, perforations had appeared near the top of the tank. I had to restrict my fill-ups to about 3/4 of a tank, about £10 worth. I feel old [V]

If it helps you feel any better Panky - commers do have very small petrol tanks...;)

Thanks folks for all the great tips so far, much appreciated:)
now all I need is a gap in the weather and a time slot when I don't need to go out for a while - mmmmmmmm, could be the trickiest bit of the job.

that was one of the reasons my first van no1 doesn't start up the tank is actually in the back of the van,as it had a leak fixed I think :)

I have one fitted, the cheap plastic variety between the pump and carbs, but shall eventually fit one of the metal canister type that shall sit under the passenger seat.

:)

Got a Filter King for the Mini (ebay of course), filter and regulator in one. Ideal for twin carbs as it maintains constant fuel pressure.

I have a 'Fuel King' regulator, unused knocking about

Is it worth fitting this?
