petrol leak

Been fixing the indicators tonight and had the ignition on..first thing the electric fuel pump keeps clicking a way when I thought it should prime with a few clicks and then stop and then the second thing I got a huge whiff of fuel, looking under the lid the SU had fuel pumping out of a non blanked off metal pipe a bit above the fuel inlet . Any ideas? People think the pump is faulty and also whether that tube should be blocked off too..no idea what its for..there is one blocked off just below it which I think is maybe a vacuum take off? Thanks guys..hope this hasn't been like this a while...scares me to think about the consequences as the fuel was running over the main lead for the alternator! Cheers

It could be a tell-tale to show that the diaphragm has gone, what kind of SU pump is it?

Sorry Jim I thought you meant the SU fuel pump was leaking:confused:
It sounds like the overflow on the float chamber, could be the float valve stuck. Definetly should not be blocked off but attach a piece of fuel line and pipe it down out of the way, the one that is blocked off is a vacuum line.

Ordered a new needle valve to be safe, for the sake of a tenner it makes sense. Taking it all off will also give me a bit more room to really sort out the exhaust, should be simple from underneath but just can't stop it blowing completely. Going to have to use a little Gun Gum in the joint.

I've ordered some new nuts for it - as someone mentioned before they are brass originally, I've just order standard steel due to cost - any particular reason they are brass or just for rusting reasons you think?

Bump...wondering if anyone else has a facet posi Flo and whether it constantly primes like mine with ignition on.. Clicks all the time. Wondering if this is normal or not and could be contributing to the carb overflowing. Cheers

It may be supplying too much pressure, I fitted a red-top Facet to the Mini but also put a Filter King pressure regulator in - you only need about 1 1/2 psi to supply the carb. The pump does click all the time though, but it does slow down a bit when the pressure is up.

Ok sound thanks panky...Do have a regulator on already set to 2 psi. As long as meant to click away that's all good. I guess the leaky needle may mean its not getting to full pressure, I think it used to quieten after a few secs but not doing that at moment. New needle arrived today so will put that on next week.

Sussed it and worrying...the float needle was in upside down, so much for a proper fully rebuilt carb. Must've been leaking for ever proper dangerous. Didn't help me fitting the new one upside down too as the mini place I got it from had it in upside down too on the pic...once id sat down and really thought about it and stared for 10mins did it become obvious and felt a bit stupid. Pic from the mini website I bought new one from...bit daft to show pic like this even more daft me following it!C__Data_Users_DefApps_AppData_INTERNETEXPLORER_Temp_Saved Images_wzx1099.jpg

No was done when I bought it but the van had a Solex on when got it - the SU I bought afterwards as a rebuilt unit and got Tim to mod the inlet...no way of Tim knowing of course - it when on, it fired up and it ran ok.

Anyway no harm done I guess...amazed it didn't catch fire and still did close to 30mpg. While running I presume it was using enough of the fuel to not spill over too much (regulator turned down to 1.5 PSI) , it was with only the ignition on and the pump priming I noticed it took about 2-3 minutes from empty to start over flowing.
