Perkinsprima Diesel engine conversion?

Klix' owner Charlie has asked me to put feelers out on whether anyone has thought about/measured up/come close to trying fitting a Perkinsprima Diesel to a PB with possible a Sherpa gearbox.

I know they are great engines as had a couple here but they looked a little bulky to me and ruled out one for Bessie in the future even though they have superb economy - but didn't measure up.

Anyone got any thoughts on how possible it sounds? am I going to regret selling the engines along with a 2litre Cav engine? [V]

Scuse my higgorance but what's the difference between the Pekinsprima and the 4.108. The latter seems to have been fitted in most things including the Sherpa and Commer so, theoretically speaking, if one fits so should the other :I or is the Sherpa engine bay as big as a salt cavern.

fraid I've been taking higgorance lessons (am now an expert:D) so have absolutely no idea what differences would be:I - I know the turbocharger on ours was the bulky looking bit but didn't measure up as would have been a bit beyond our available time frames to sort out mounts & any possible transmission troubles for Bessie.

Sounds possible then? - does anyone know of any just cause or impediment why this engine and engine bay should not be joined in perfect union?

Our Montego we ran with the TD Perkinsprima gave a steady 53MPG all through the massive mileages it racked up on the Lincolnshire runs (did a few years of 1000 miles a fortnight) - and went like stink too so might be a very good option if it'll fit.

They are 2 different engines. the prima is OHC and direct injection (its a dieselised BL O series) you can find one in a pre-94 leyland daf 200/sherpa with a matching 5 speed box.the older freight rover and sherpa models used a diesel 1800 BMC B series engine which you don't want.
Theres no reason you couldnt use a later LDV pilot engine, its the familiar 1.9 Peugeot XUD as used in countless BXs,405s,306s,berlingos etc. and has the benefit of being readily available and cheap. it's no power house at 72 bhp but still a big improvement on the old 1700 perkins, its long lived reliable and economical and of course there was a turbo version available

Thanks MrsP - that is really useful information for those looking at a diesel conversion.
