Perkins Diesel - Veggie Oil

Im thinking that the perkins diesel is so agricultural that it wouldnt need too much fiddling to run it on veg oil / dieso-veg oil mix, what does everyone reckon?

and.... does anyone know if the injectors etc are the same as the ones on the perkins 6? (thats what they use in the navy)

It should run fine on it :)
injectors may be the same bodies with different internals ;)

I think corn oil in 5 litre contaiers from cheepo supermarkets is a bit cheaper than derv:) But you might need a pre-heater:I

would the perkins really run on veggy oil straight off the cuff so to speak, or would you have to do loads of mods to it first.mmmm interesting as the panel van of mine is a diesel.;)[?]:p

i think the only issue is fuel pump seals but i think thats more of an issue on modern diesel engines

I watched one of those 'self sufficient' type programs ages ago and a guy converted an aging Citroen van to run on veggie oil. He installed a tank in the back along with a pre-heater for the veggie oil and a change over switch - the engine was started on diesel then switched over to cheap cooking oil. The only difference he noticed was the smell of chips wafting from the exhaust.
I remember commer walk thru having a go with his van but he did have fouling problems.

I had a Sherpa with a Perky before I got the Commer. I ran it on straight vegetable oil. Ran used oil from the local chippies (sieve the fish heads out first ;), leave to settle for 2 weeks and dont use the sludgy bottom 1/3 of the barrel) so it was totally free.
It wouldnt start on used oil so i ran two tanks with a cab switchover (switch over to wiesel just before turning off)
Even so I still needed a preheater in the fuel line and the tank or it would be too waxy, cost about £60.
Had loads of great laughs and was always a talking point at festivals.
It actually ran smoother on oil, although very smokey
Would still be doing it but got a bit older and a bit more worried about the excise duty angle :(

I might try adding the odd couple of litres here & there - to see what percentage can be run without issues

I think that you are allowed to produce something like 3,000 litres of the stuff for your own use before any tax issues. That's just my recollection from threads on other forums though, don't take it as gospel.

ive run a t reg renault scenic, and renault traffic 2004 exclusively on used veg oil and had mixed results. The only problem that i encountered apart from stupid mistakes, was in the colder months the oil will solidify and therefore wont start in your engine, so mix with a higher proportion of diesel (50%) or petrol (20%) to keep the veg oil liquid. in the summer just stick it in. Please dont take my word as gospel as its only my findings. If you have the space and time, you can take used veg oil, clean out solids, mix in 5% petrol or white spirit, leave for 4-6 weeks then skim off the top (usually about 80%), this is a fine diesel substitute. some things to think about; rudolph diesel invented his engine to run on peanut oil, veg oil has a higher calorific value than diesel, veg oil has no carbon deposits so should'nt wear your engine as quickly. veg oil is renewable.
 
ok i found it, this website is cool becasue he doesnt advocate normal biodiesel.

Sadly not, you have to pay duty on every drop used as a motor fuel on the Queens Highway:(. You can produce a certain amount, it was 2k L when I was doing it, without having to register as a licenced motor fuel distributor (with all the red tape and Health & Safety implications that involves):(:(

just to clarify - i clicked the link and the SOPHOS virus software on my work computer went beserk telling me there was a reported risk on that site, some sort of worm - prevented me from using the link and then bloody well sent an email to our IT department telling them - thats gonna be me in the rattle next week!
