Well, today after doing a few errands I decided to have a look at Peggy's workings. First job was to adjust the fan belt as it was a bit slack and was screeching a bit. Found a brand new spare in the back as well so that saves me a couple of quid. Next job was to check over the ignition. The plug leads look nearly new as did the plugs - although they were very sooty! Cleaned up the plugs (no. 4 is bloody awkward to get to!) and re-fitted them. Took the dizzy cap off (again, looks new) and inspected the innards. It all looks new and the shaft has been nicely greased, points gap looked OK too. There was a bit of powdery alloy corrosion inside the dizzy which I cleaned up a bit before fitting it all back together.
Unfortunately I couldn't get to the dizzy clamp so I did not abide by my 'ign first then carb' rule. I started her up and waited for her to warm up. Once she would idle with no choke (temp never left the first red zone - wondering if I have a sender-gauge mismatch?) I set the idle to run fast and weakened the mixture until she started hunting. I then decreased the idle speed to a normal one. She was still running rich but the smell wasn't quite as bad.
So I decided to take her for a run, she actually went quite well although there was still some crackling and the odd back-fire. So having got her running reasonably well I decided to give her a full tank of fuel. After several gallons went in some started coming out! So I stopped putting it in! Drove her home and saw that she had 1/2 tank. That'll do for now but she'll obviously need one of the nice new tanks at some point. Got her home and while manouvreing her into the back garden she stalled right across the alley, completely blocking it and the garage opposite.
Would she start? Would she buggery! Could I push her up the slope into the garden? Could I hell! Anyone esle around to help? Was there feck!
Was I due to collect my son from school soon? Oh yes!
In desperation I called Andy 'Thowman' (Yes, I was that desperate) between giggles he suggested I try a breaker bar on a wheel nut to slowly move her back. I decided to make a coffee instead. But I thought I'd give her one last try..................................and she burst into life! This was about 30 mins after she stalled, I reckon it's the old fuel starvation as she was hot enough to set the leccy fan off.
Anyway, she's back in the garden and running better. I may have another go at juggling the mixture and idle speed to get her leaner still. Not until this weekend though as I'm back to work tomorrow and off to a conference in Wakefield oop North.
Also pulled down a gate and a bit of fence to make it easier to get her into the garden.
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?
Peggy's got an MOT !!! (not a lie)
