Hey guys, long time no see. We're getting ready to paint our Commer and although we're by no means after a mint job we don't want to wreck it for the sake of it. Mainly we just want to keep the rust off. Below are the pictures of the Commer where it stands.

We want to build some bodged up kind of shield over it just to keep the bugs and rain off, I was wondering if you could throw some suggestions our way as to what we should attempt. Basically what I'm think is some old planks of wood nailed together and plastic sheeting stuck over it. I'd like to hear all your thoughts on the matter though. FYI we're not spraying it, we're just going to use either a roller or brush then sand it and buff it later to get it remotely smooth. Like I say, it's mainly just to protect the metal.

Still trying to think where to get the plastic sheeting and wood from.

Have you seen Adam and Ange's thread, they are doing a cracking job without protection - you just need to pick your days.

Thanks Panky, just had a look through and it's a similar method to what we're planning. The problem is that we really don't have enough time on our hands to wait for the weather or make that many attempts. Also we live in an inner city area which also happens to be home to lots and lots of cats. The plan is for me to take some time off then just get stuck into it with thicker coats. This wouldn't take as long but the paint would take longer to dry, hence the need for some kind of protection.

I see your problem:I. You could use your side fence as a starting point and build your frame up and over off that. Try a builders merchant for clear plastic sheet, it can come in 12' widths - don't know price but it is fairly cheap. The other alternative is to hire a tarp from HSS or similar.

could put a wanted on freecycle for market stall frame & tarps what about asking a local farmer for hire of a barn for a week? Good luck with spray job

Honestly with the method I used theres no need for tarps and working undercover.Yes admittedly grit and little bugs commit suicide by getting stuck but they are sanded out between layers so it need not bother you-just up the amount of thinners and it will dry out within a couple of hours.Plus you dont have to mask everything off as the paint isnt airbourne.Ive spent about 2 weeks doing a coat here and there and I dont think it looks too bad and still needs another couple coats and flattening..

Overall cost about £100 for paint and materials-and rememebr I used too different colours and he is a Highwayman:D

I was thinking you could park up in a multistory carpark early on a monday morning, stick a coat on and go off for a cup of coffee and a bit of shopping - then come back and stick another coat on etc...

if you pick an out of the way level you should be fine!
