LOL:D my method is you do all the hard work and prep like me then get your van in a spray booth and do a proper job. By the time you have faffed about with that nasty paint and its not cheap you could get it painted.

Then give the whole van a coat of bar coat like this

It all depends on how you want it to look,how long you want it to last and how good your prep work is?? No point putting a goog paint job on bad prep work, its like building a house on dodgy foundations;)
Like Col says, cost is also a factor. Good luck with how ever you apply[8D]

Jon there is absolutely no doubt in your ability to get a fine job done..BUT...The Rustoleum method is merely an alternative to getting a nice job done for far less than a pro job! Plus, we don't all have the luxury of a spray booth and all the tools do we;) I agree on the prep though as i'm finding that gremlins are visible:D more flatting back needed then:)
 
just read the link again and im sure i can do this!!going to finish prep this week and hope to start painting next two weeks :)..i will not win best shed again LOL

There must be someone local to you with a booth that does cheap self prep resprays?? Its just once that rustoleum is painted on there is no going back[V]
The halfords stuff is a nitro synthetic paint you can spray,brush or roller it to.
Use a block when you do your flating as much as possible or you get finger marks;)

im going to halfords in a min to get battery checked as hes not starting..so will ask about the paint also..im not wanting marley to look all shiny and perfect to be honest..just want to smarten him up and i am on a budget so painting him for may be under 200 suits me fine and wouldnt expect with me doing it to be a perfect job!..i am female after all..but i will put my all into it..just like i did doing him up :) also having interior fitted so that is going to be costly in a month ..exciting tho!

My battery was broke..no wonder it wouldnt start!..so Marley has a brand new one..will fit tomorrow..fingers crossed..be nice to actually be able to drive him since i got him back :)

I always use cellulose, but I have the advantage of a good compressor and spray gun. As others have said the key is in the preparation.
I do most of my spraying outside so I am dependant on the weather and the beauty of using celly is it can be flat and polished to a mirror like shine no matter how it has gone on unless you try and paint on a damp day!
It takes a lot of elbow grease and hard work to get a good flat surface to paint and again flatting and polishing if the gun finish is`nt perfect but the end results are superb....if I could post pics I would show you some wings off my Bedford CA that I have just done.
2 pack is a good paint but you have to apply it in a booth and wear an air respirator as the paint contains cyanide which is`nt very good for your lungs! Also unlike celly you cant touch it in easily, if you get a scratch you have to paint the whole panel where as with celly you can blow it in and cut it back. Personally I do not like the "plasticy look" of 2 pack its just not right for old vehicles as they were originally painted in Celly or acrylic paint....but thats just my opinion and I think some of the vehicles painted in two pack look stunning.
As for painting a car or camper with a roller, well I guess its horses for courses and not everyone can afford or has the facilitys to get a respray but you can knock hundreds of pounds off the value of your van when you use this approach, I have seen some good solid vans ruined by being rollered or brush painted and they can become virtually unsaleable when painted like that. Think about it, would you buy a camper that has been painted with a roller or brush?

I would really not paint your van with a roller !
if your close enough we could work something out with a spray job.
 
So if and when cellulose and 2 pack are outlawed to manufacture, supply, buy and use, what are we gonna use[?];)

Ah yes the old Water-borne, two part acrylic, spraying cellulose is rubbish what we going to do now !

I love these arguments It seems that the new is never going to be as good as the old. Well water-borne is fine and the reason it shines so well when clear coated.............. Its 2K (two part acrylic) clear coat that goes over the top !!!

The problem with the roller job is not the finish or the prep its the material/paint that is used :(
Its a slow dry mineral oil based paint that's mainly used for plant machinery, tractors, trucks and trailer chassis think of it more like hammerite ! its the same stuff it dries like custard in that it forms a smooth skin but stays wet underneath.
Ideal for resisting scratches and stone chips!!!

BUT
It will take years for it to fully cure/dry and you will only be able to put the same stuff over it.
you can't use it as a "quick tidy up" and have it painted later cos nothing will stick to it!

If you where to bring it to me for a respray after you had rollered it you would be charged for removing it all first the bar-coating to seal it before any automotive paint was applied.

I've been painting cars,bikes,vans anything for 20 years years now and home brush paint jobs always cause grief.

As for water-borne I love it !

No rant;) i don't expect a qualified auto painter to agree with any other method than spray gun to be fair. I will go ahead with what i'm doing as i'm not planning on selling the van. Also, once done - who would want another respray for a few years anyway? All methods are cool in my book. We wanted something different and i wanted to give things a go myself as i have done pretty much everything else myself. Yes if i dig around i can find all my faults in glorious technicolor, as i'm sure others will, but i don't give a monkey's, it's our van and we love it "Warts 'N' All";)i'm not going for the concorse, and i have no interest in winning any awards neither. I'm going for the usable, cos that's all my ability will stretch to also:D Just to end though....I have seen some shocking spray jobs too so swings and roundabouts i suppose[?]:D
 
Not so sure about it not curing for "years" - it would make it impossible for the people who have done this before to rub it down between coats, which they have.
