Pablo highwayman

Why don't you call the owner as he might be a really nice guy and happy to chat and answer any questions......

It's so good to see some pictures from Pablo's former life! I had no idea I could have spoken to previous owners here!

The webber carb detail is interesting. How would I know it wasn't fitted from knew? I just went with that based on they guy who sold it to me and that I was lead to believe that the webber carb was an factory fitted option available from new.

I can confirm that yes the cab needs new bottom doors, the passenger door doesn't fit tight as you say, there is obvious use of filler on the cab and it needs attention.

I greased all the nipples and gear linkages last year and last week replaced the gearbox oil. I got too cold lying in the rain to continue trying to adjust the gear system. If it's not the adjustment is there another spot to lubricate I missed?

Price is always going to be debated. I love this van, as does my family and as do my friends so I don't want to sell it off cheap to someone who will snap it up and sell it on. I put a price based on my experience around other classic vans and what this van actually gives you. The value and quality of the living space is amazing I think especially compared to the Citroen H Van and the 64 split we have in the family. It sleeps 4 and caters for six at dinner time!

The body work yes needs attention but everything else is great. I just had fitted a full stainless exhaust system costing nearly £300 guaranteed for life. This was more important than the body work for me as I just want to get on and enjoy using it and not get caught up about making it shiny (equally I understand he need to do the body work to ensure its future) People will pay what they will pay for something and each person values things differently. It comes down to how much you want something and what your budget is. I loved this van when I saw it and so I bought it to replace my VW T4 camper despite knowing it was older and would cost me more money to keep and run than the VW.

I also based my price on the advert for Gloria on here http://www.classic-campers.co.uk/

I am keen to see the van go on to an owner who will use and enjoy it. If he doesn't sell before July he will be taking us down to Le Man Classic and enjoy a summer of surf trips. I am only selling because we recently moved to a new house that I need to work on, we have a 2CV, a MK1 VW caddy and a Citroen H van that needs work. So I could do with freeing up some space and losing the camper would make me get on with the H Van.

I agree, call Martin and get an idea of some costs, he has always been very helpful with parts and advise with me.

If you are genuinely interested feel free to call me, or I can call you.

Cheers

P.s what is the actual model of Pablo?

Has anyone tried to fit a TDI engine in a commer?

Hi Will and welcome to the Madhouse:D
It's always good to get a sellers view and I'm glad you took the comments made in a positive way - some people get very upset when we are not to complimentary[8)]
Your van is a CI Autohome, the same body was also fitted to Transits and Bedfords. Jon, our resident mobile garage, has started fitting a Ford turbo diesel lump but his new business has cut into the time he has available to finish it of - slacker, get your finger out Jon;)

Welcome along Mr. Beamins:)

Now you have found this site, maybe you can be persuaded to stay and keep your Commer, which you must admit,
beats the other vehicles you mention;)

Ah yes, I guy did recently come up to me at a petrol station and had a look around Pablo. He had the same body on a transit. Such a good body design (as far as fibre glass goes)

Had a good look around and there are some great vans around, iv only ever seen two comers on the roads. The problem with Pablo compared to my other vehicles is it doesn't fit in the garage!

Also I am all about upgrading old vehicles with modern benefits. I drive my Caddy everyday with a 1.9TDI I put in and I want to do the same with the H VAN like this build http://www.steeringboxscrapers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=9337&start=60 . I can't see the commer fitting this sort of conversation in it.

If I am still in ownership I am thinking of heading to the Wales camping weekend in May as it's not to far from Bristol. Let's see what happens!

Hi Will, welcome to the madhouse.

If you do decide to keep Pablo, don't be afraid of upgrades (hope Les isn't reading this), they can transform your van's attributes. It is not always necessary to go the route of a modern engine, much can be done with the original, as I am sure Tim will explain, including the 6 speed gearbox.

Hi Will,

Thank you for posting your reply - we are very new to searching for vans so the advice on here is invaluable!

I am going to look into the costs of new cab doors and repair to the cab where it is rusty. Do you have any pictures that you could send me showing the olf filler?

Thanks
Hazel

I can when I get home. I'm away working till mid next week.

My advise for what it's worth is look at as many vans as you can to get a feel for them. They will always need money put into them especially if you can't do the little bits yourself. You will know when you have the right van as it will feel right.

Happy hunting!

Hello and welcome Hazel.
To get an idea of how much it will cost for restoration just go onto Readers Rides and and have a look at the thread about Lulu, but you should start at page one and very carefully work your way through it and that will give you all the information that you need.

Ok, I might ask that question.

Wow, Les (sorry I called you Lulu!) that's scared me quite considerably the amount you have spent!

Or budget definitely doesn't stretch that far!

You do not have to go to the extreme that Les has. The CI only needs cab rectification work not a full blown nut and bolt rebuild! You can do as much or as little as you want, if you can do work yourself then the costs can be minimal. Its good that the owner has come forward and been very sensible about the critique on here, its not personal and we all see things through different eyes and place different values on things. If you are going to buy an old vehicle, or any vehicle for that matter, then there are going to be costs and work involved, the joy of an old classic Commer is that they are super easy to maintain/repair and now have a terrific parts back up, spares are easier to obtain now and more plentiful than they were 20 years ago!

Bloody Commer`s!
