P5 axle

Hi

I think i have found a P5 axle. Can someone take a photo of the drums. Are the shaped like a cone with the top cut off and opposed to a normal flat drum. Do you have to use the whole axle or just the diff center in the original commer axle?

Hi Brad, here's a few pics of my P5B axle - its should be the same. I'm pretty sure you'll need to use the whole thing - and fit new spring mounts, might as well modify it to take telescopic shocks instead of the lever arms.

as panky says just use the whole axle and modify things to fit :)

I've just been crawling under Harvey measuring rear spring centres and comparing with the Rover axle. Commer spring centre 43 1/2" - Rover 41 3/4" so they won't fit straight on, but it would be fairly simple to widen the saddle and the shocker mounts would still be there to make fitting telscopics a bit simpler. Trouble is the Rover springs are under-slung, fine if you want to slam the rear end, but what if you simply turn the axle over so you can mount the axle under the springs to get the normal ride height. Is there any reason this can't be done - apart from the diff drain plug being on the top, could the brake back plates be swapped over side for side so the cylinders - and bleed nipples (I'm not getting caught out again:I) are in the right configuration. Or would it be simpler to make new mounts [8)]

if you turn the axle upside down you will have four reverse gears and one forward :D i dont think you want to be caught out one that one as well panky [:0]
easiest thing is make new mounts ;)

if I get a chance in daylight tommorrow I have a P5 here which might be able to photograph drums, no idea if any different to P5B

Thanks team. That looks exactly the same as the one im looking at. I was by myself so it was a little hard to measure but it seemed wider than a commer axle. Is it definatly the same width?

Pretty much, a few people have done the conversion without any problems. I'll measure up and let you know for sure later.

ive had the pleasure of owning two rover p5 coupes they were both cracking cars i wish i hadnt of sold them now.;)[V]

AHA! Not if you turn the van around ;)
 
drawn a bit of a blank on our P5 I'm afraid - it is currently a little too buried at the back of the shed to get a jack to it to get wheel off:I As far as my other half knows axle would be the same as P5B just possibly different diff ratios.
