overheating and oil pressure

Hello there just wondering if any one has any advice for me as im unsure of a couple of things. Ive recently got my newley purchased commer wanderer through the MOT and have obviously been driving it around! However after a very short time the temperature gage says that it is nearly in the red and it doesnt come down at all. Ive checked the water in the radiator and this seems to be ok, could it be the thermostat? Should i check anything else?
Also the oil pressure light slowley comes on and then my commer cuts out completely, i drove around for a little while with the choke out a bit and this helped, however it has got worse. Any advice, info, ideas on this would be much apreciated too. Thanks!

flush the radiator ? coolant ? the weather is hot & they seem to run hot any way,cutting out could be points condenser loose wire some where sounds likely to be electrical,usually the way, when you buy an old vehicle you find all it's faults,hopefully the others will pop in tonight with better advise :)

Hi Alex, could be a number of things all conspiring to give you grief. The temperature gauge should be wired in through the voltage stabiliser or it will read high. Are you sure the engine is running cooler than the gauge suggests - try changing the sender unit, you never know someone may have put the wrong one in that is ranged differently. The engine cutting out could be because of fuel vaporisation made worse by this hot weather, one suggestion we have had is to run the fuel line from the pump in front of the radiator instead of across the engine to give a bit of cooling effect. Another reason for the fuel starvation could be because of the old Commer enemy 'snakeskin' - bits of paint flaking off the inside of the tank and blocking the fuel lines.
The oil light sounds worrying - first off is the plenty of good clean oil in the sump - when was it last serviced. If that's OK check the circuit through for bad connections and maybe change the sender unit.

change the oil filter as well :) it could also be a leaking manifold gasket, if it runs better when hot with a bit of choke, then the mixture is weak ;)

The mixture must be incredibly weak if it runs cooler on choke. See what the plugs look like.

Cheers guys i shall have a look over it checking what you have all mentioned this weekend, and ill give it a full service too as im unsure of when the last one was done.
