Overdrive

When I bought our van the bloke said not to engage overdrive below 40mph and only in 4th. Is there any reason I can't overdrive 3rd at say 35ish on those gentle uphill and twisty 40mph bits where it can't quite mange 4th (due to my lack of guts on the corneres etc)but 3rd is a bit noisy? I understand it automatically disengages in 1st and 2nd but I always switch out of it before I change down anyway. I tried it and it worked fine as I couldn't see why it would be a problem but wanted to check what people thought here.

OD should be wired to be used in 3rd and 4th so there should be no problem using it in both, unless there is a particular problem with your g'box. I found pulling away briskly going up through the gears, including OD, gave a nice steady acceleration - close ratio 6 gears :p. Normal driving I engaged OD at 40 and took the speed up from there. Knocking the OD off while in top also gave a nice 'kick-down'.

I concur...

Overdrives rock and should be used in as many gears as possible (well 3rd and 4th)

the overdrive works by a pump which generates pressure in the overdrive unit to hold the overdrive "on". The pressure needs to be above a certain value for the OD to work and if the main gearbox shaft is moving too slowly, the pump won't generate enough pressure and hte ovedrive won't work (or the friction linings will be toasted).

so there you go...

If I am overdriving 3rd what do I do when going into 4th, will it automatically 'click out' when I change up or will I need to disengage it first?

Isnt there also a switch which prevents actuation in anything but 3rd & 4th. There is on mine but mine was stolen from a Rapier. Maybe the original is different.
Activating O/D in reverse would kill it pretty instantly

There is an inhibitor switch Jules, it's usually fitted on the gearbox opposite the reversing light switch.
