Overdrive wiring diagram help

I have been trying to find on a 3G connection the wiring diagram for the speedy spares supplied overdrive relay. I know Panky has recently posted up, but I cannot find the threads where this is. Any chance of someone posting it up, preferably sooner rather than later before the light runs out.

Can this diagram be put on a sticky topic.

Please don't reply unless you can post the diagram

This is the one for the original type of overdrive relay that isn't available anymore. There is another relay, the 6RA that Speedies supply that is slightly different. That's the one I couldn't get my fingers on today while rewiring someone's van. Got it working in the end, but access to this diagram Would be useful.

all I can say Andy is well done you for getting the speedy one to work[8D] myself and a few others have bought one and gave up with it..a very talented Bernie made me one up in the end (haven't forgotten I owe you Bernie) I might still have the speedy's one with the diagram, I'll have a look in daylight:)

I had that problem (I think) the relay speedies sent me didn't work with the self cancelling switch.

Initally I found an old original relay which worked well then started failing when hot, couldn't find a replacement as there are lots of relays with hte same name!

I got myself a non-self cancelling switch and re-wired it and it's been fine ever since. As far as I can remember, the wiring diagram is in the manual.

The Speedy spares latching relay does work with self cancelling switch. That is the one I was working with, not this original type relay. Both of the above diagrams are for the original relay, not the replacement.

When I get a moment, I will draw the wiring diagram for the speedy relay. As I will be fitting an overdrive soon, and would prefer to have a self cancelling switch set up, I will post the correct wiring here.

IIRC there are two types of wiring on overdrive, with some you need a residual voltage of some 3v in circuit to keep unit engaged > Rootes manual does I recall give the details

My pal has fitted a few overdrives in his time and it was he that told me and also had me sourcing relays and column switches as they surfaced, plus he recommends highly, Overdrive Services in Sheffield for any overdrive problem

You had the loop going from 85 to 87a instead of 87. That's why it didn't work. You shouldn't put any wire on 87a. I also put an earth coming off 86. Not sure if it will work without it.
 
From my limited knowledge the original and thowman's relay is what is called a changeover** relay using 3 rather than more normal 2 contacts > the 6RA overdrive relay I believe was a specialised version Lucas made for such applications but now hard to find and expensive > took me ages to source one for my mate for his Super Minx. The more run of the mill version of 6RA I recall was on such as Avenger Tigers for Lucas 700 driving lights fitted as standard on this model

Can understand the original rootes diagram but bit puzzled about only using 2 of three contacts on new relay > why sell 3 contact relay if using only 2 [which an easily sourced std relay provides]??

Original Laycock engineers i understand are at Overdrive Services in Sheffield > perhaps one of their guys could offer an opinion as to what works best? My mate speaks very highly of them for any overdrive issue from making new parts to full rebuilds

** I've used these relays in past for adding high power main and dip lights using original dipswitch > my relay was an Autolec
Incidentally with relays IIRC there are two basic types, one can take constant high current other takes short bursts such as when working air horns but is not intended for contant use
 
Just a quick update. I have solved the overdrive wiring for the Speedies supplied crossover relay. I will post up a diagram when I have had a chance to draw it. The speedy wiring instructions are completely incorrect. I will post the diagram in the mechanical hints column.
