Overdrive gearbox...

So about to drop the box and thinking another leak looks between the box and the od unit so rather than taking the whole unit off the van on my own on my back can a simply unbolt the od unit from the box and remove that only? Will it just easily go back on afterwards, keep seeing stuff about lining up gears etc. bu t not sure that just if splitting the od unit itself.

Thanks

Jim

Never done it that way but If it wont go back together you can always drop the box then:)
The only problem I had was lining up the washer that sits right at the back of the tail shaft housing, all it needed was a bit of a wiggle to get it lined up but that was with the box up-ended - it may be a bit more difficult with the box still on the van.

Thanks Panky...one more daft q...so I split the od straight after the black box...I.e the end of the black bit is the gearbox...also will a long shaft be sticking out of the gearbox I guess and that's what goes into the planet gears?

Had to drop the gearbox too in the end...remind me never to put an OD gearbox in on a cold dark night no jack on your own...4 hours later! Anyway least it's on and hopefully all fixed. After finding the first issue with 3 out of the 5 bolts that attach the OD to the gearbox sheared or missing I investigated why the Speedo had stopped working a while ago and found a cracking bodge job... someone had glued on a plastic Speedo worm drive from a J drive OD (maybe) and switched pinion to a 16 teeth one...as a spacer they'd cut a large socket in half and glued that on too, amazing ingenuity and must have took a fair while to do, new correct bits were only £20 so not sure why they'd gone down that root. All fixed properly now and almost back together...just need to finish bolting it up, put the linkages back on, exhaust etc. Then get the new drive shaft from Martin and MOT it...
bodge job

Correct parts on , yes the pinion drive is in backwards drove me mad for 10 mins when trying to put it back in till I realised

There's no better way to change a box:D
Doing a fine job - and I'd be proud of that bodge[^]

Well finally all back together...took the opportunity to tighten and shim up the gear transfer block next to the side of the gearbox with some tin and tighten the joints on box itself. After all the issues with getting third etc. The change is crisp and factory fresh...lovely also no leaks yet. MOT next :/

Bloody nora - still got a drip from between the gearbox and OD...must've been under zealous with the gasket sealant in one spot...only a tiny drip but still a pain and at least the drive shaft is sealed tight now - grrrr. It's not coming off again this Summer for sure so think I'll just have to putty it in the short term.

On a brighter note MR M provided the bits for the MOT so should have that sorted today - boom.

Good luck with the MOT, good old Martin:D Have you tried and extra little nip with the spanners?

Will do - seem to remember doing em pretty damn tight, if that doesn't work they will be the putty solution until Winter time when I'll be lifting the engine anyhow to do the rings.

Better news is the MOT - it has passed and is back on the drive, the OD box is much better, changes are sharper I guess as the pressure is now increased. Next thing is the electric fuel is v noisy at the moment - hoping just as its low on fuel so not fully priming
