Our new commer highwayman

Spoke to highwayman friends this eve and they are hoping to get back to abandoned 66 van again soon - looks like you're well away with internal repairs so am guessing photos not needed but are there any inner panels you are after? apparently some have survived really well and they are willing to grab anything useful for you if needed. May well be different but they are happy to look for you.

Photos look amazing - really glad you got them loaded up o.k., you've done some wonderful things - good luck with gearbox/clutch

All the original seat bases and cupboards have be cut or damaged in some way or another, but we really would loke an original sink with cupboard underneath and folding worktop if that is available, the cooker we have is not original so we are looking for the type that fits in the same cupboard as sink and has a metal heat shield and covering worktop. we have been told it shuold have a water tank, even pictures of one and where it should go will help as to replace it. any lights swithches, original curtain tracks, anything that will take it back to how it should be when it was new. tap,water pump any items even small all help. photos would be grate of all interior for reference. we will use items we have at the moment to get it ready to use but as the right stuff comes up we will put it back to original. please tell your friends any item is a bonus, thanks Lynne & gary
 
O.k. owner of scrap van will be delighted that it is providing useful bits for a couple of highwaymans. We're based in West Wales so am guessing will have to sort out courier prices for whatever can be saved - but will see what can be rescued and how good condition is first.

This is friends' van which is same age as scrapper - may well a few differences to yours as 3 years younger

Thanks for comming back so quick most needed parts are lights and switches,sink,taps,water pump and water tank.We don't want to be greedy but if no one else wants them then yes please.Thanks Gary and Lynne.
 
Can any one tell me what the round hole n/s back is for please,it is about 8"and goes through to the corner toilet space.Thanks lynne.
 
Hi Lynne, where is the hole, is it in the floor, the wall? A picture could help someone find an answer :)

Hi ,this is a factory fitted round recess and all old highwaymans seem to have it, if you look at billbay van in oz his has it but it has been blanked off. Has anybody else got an old highwayman or does anybody have an old original brochure or sales literature that might help. We have searched all those on this archive but none are for our model or year. thanks
 
Thanks panky thats a good one, how many of these early highwayman are left.Somebody in the classic camper club used to own our van, I have tried contacting the classic camper club since we have had it to see if anybody there can help but they have just not replied, I have even phoned and left messages, new lady in charge called jane, still no reply. I think they don't like our van !!!

try contacting classiccommer on here she is from ccc should be able to help :)
I had the same problem when I bought an austin J2 cotswold camper,don't do what I did & sell it :I simply couldn't get a reply,possibly down to their pc settings? do not accept emails from anyone not in address book ....maybe?I am sure it's nothing to do with not liking your van [8D]

Hi thanks for that, I will contact her, do I go to members and contact her in email. Also it rained last night, don't know how much but oh yes the old girl is dry. what a relief if we had done all that and it still leaked I would have been just a little disappointed, Still its raining again here so gary will not go to work, so a little more will get done on her today, maybe the side panel so the window can go back in, Update tonight.
 
Am wondering if hole is to vent cupboard/loo to stop it getting damp? and maybe to provide some light? seems odd not a proper vent rather than a hole though.

p.s. delighted things stayed dry, good going as water can find its' way into the tiniest gap

Hi ,thanks for these, do we know who owns the originals to see if the quality of the picture is better, this is most like our van, the cooker is the same as ours so it did not have a worktop on top of it as in later models. We are looking at material for seats so this picture will help us try to get something similar. Does anybody else you know have a commer of the same age as ours please. 1963.

The mystery hole at the top/back of the Highwayman body sounds like the fresh water filler, that someone has removed! It worked on the gravity feed principle, but you needed a step ladder to fill the tank, not a great idea.

Hi thanks for this info, if this was a fresh water filler where was the water tank then, as ours has not got one? , I have emailed the classic camper club thanks for the email address.
 
I currently have originals of page with pics and that is about as good as it gets I'm afraid - is fairly dotty printing I'm afraid (not half as dotty as the person doing the scanning:I) specification on that page does mention cold water tank filled from outside.

this is a newer highwayman that has been on the forum - cushions look very similar to what black and white pics could be

Klix had fairly plain muddy brown/grey when it first arrived and came with a spare roll of fabric, a bit blurry but gives general idea..

Hi thank you for trying, maybe somebody out there may have more pictures or brochures, do you know when bluebird first started making our van and how many are left from this early period. I am hoping somebody from the classic camper club might be able to help. If I get anymore stuff i will put it on the archive for everybody to enjoy. We have had great support from everybody on this forum and it is a credit to you all that you welcome everybody and encourage us in our antics.
