This is what was on a Jag Forum:
P1797 : CAN network to gearbox. CAN stands for controller area network - basically an electronic signalling systems.
First move is to fully charge your battery or preferably replace with a known good one and check the battery connections. Then work through all the gearbox electronic connections with contact cleaner and easing them in and out. Your fault may be no more than a poor connection. If that does not work you need someone competent with electronic diagnostics and probably Jag main dealer diagnostics.

The car has a brand new battery on so that wont be the problem but connections may well be as the car has lain unused for a couple of years, strangely though it drove down today from Scotland absolutely fine and then devolped a miss when it was restarted after an hour or so.
I shall have all the connectors cleaned and see what happens.

It has coil per cylinder on your jag so take the covers off the top of the engine and swap number 8 cylinder with another cylinder,clear the code,start the engine and let it run fo a while so the management system picks up the misfire,then code read it again. If the misfire has now moved cylinder, take the coil out you have just swapped bin it and buy a new one

This is the problem with "P" codes they are generic eobd codes so can mean different things on diffrent models,but saying that if the code starts with "P1xxx" then its usually good data and maufactures specific. On a jag the code you have means "P1797 Neutral Switch Circuit Malfunction" but cant see that relating to a misfire,the coils are quite common on these jags so i would swap it for a new one to try it.The coils usually come up with "P13xx" Do you have a code reader with live data to look at each cylinder??

I have no OBD equipment so left it at my local garage to read the codes and sort it.
They have got it running on 8 pots again by cleaning various plugs on the loom but it still has a miss on tickover which clears when revved and driven. My son is a service manager at a garage in Leighton Buzzard which specalise in diagnosing and repairing faults that other garages and dealers cant so I will probably take it to them next week to sort out.
Give me old fashioned points condensors plugs leads and coils any day

Alan, is yours an XK8 with a supercharged engine dropped in, or an XKR. I've heard that the engine transplant is possible, but an awful lot of hassle and a lot easier just to buy an XKR.

Its a genuine XKR and it was the part exchange vehicle against the Commer Moto-Plus!
I have`nt had a chance to take any pics yet as I am really busy this week with transport work but I shall post some on Flickr on Friday. I do like my Jags, even modern ones, but this is the first XK that I have owned and I`m looking forward to using it a bit before selling it on after New Year [8D]

A friend of mine did the conversion.... engine and box where easy... but he then found out he also had to change a lot of electrics computers etc... and those are a lot of wires... not to be recommended

My problem turned out to a failing coil on number 8 cylinder. The cost from Jaguar for a new one? a mere £275.00 and thats just for one coil, good job it does`nt need all 8 replacing!

They call me doctor Jon diagnosed correctly cured with care
Not bad without even seeing the car. Are those coils made by denso??
They don't release the patient on them,so other manufactures can't make non gen replacement like the other makes. Can't see the renault coils lasting very long for £12.50 not made by fuel parts is it Mart??

Denso do make coils for the XKR but only for the 4 pin version and mine is the 2 pin, Lucas list a coil that matches the Jaguar part number so we have one coming on Thursday. BTW manufacturers are required by law to allow other companys the info to make pattern parts, they all comply except Chrysler who are currently being investigated as to why they refuse to do so.

Were did you get this info from:

As it is so not true.
The new smart charge systems on the ford range is a good example of this, as you can buy a copy part but it doesnt work. The alternators will charge but the warning light stays on and the smart charge system does not work as it should. You can buy a copy replacemnt coil for the audi vw range,it works but leaves the management light on all the time,you can clear it short drive up the road comes back on again.
But Denso are one of the worst for sharing.

This is where we can all easily get the wrong end of the stick on the forum.
My exclamation mark was meant as nothing more than well done for getting the problem right but it seems it has been misconstrued as something it was not meant to be.

I got my info on manufactures having to allow pattern parts to be made from the garage where my son is the service manager, they only do diagnostic repairs and sort problems no one else will touch or can solve, including main dealers and they recently solved a problem that even Chrysler`s own factory technical people had given up on after the owner had spent in excess of £3k on.
