I wonder if there would be enough headroom if you replaced it with flat plate, that's if the hi-top is going back on.
 
The high top is definitely going back on so the gutter line is absolutely crucial as the roof needs to sit perfectly in it. My philosophy is what ever happens jimmy must live on so failure isn't an option (pep talk to ones self over lol)
 
Oh wow!! That is terrifying!

It seems like the rain gutters are really quite susceptible to rust where two pieces of metal are joined together. Can I ask what the best course of action is to try and prevent this? Is it worth applying something like the Deox stuff I have seen Panky mention along those join lines then clean off and apply a clear waxoyl or similar in these areas, or is there a better course of action? Apologies if this is a hijack of the thread but I thought it relevant to the pictures seen here! :)
 
This is an extreme example, probably the worst I've seen caused by a close fitting hi-top trapping moisture for the last forty odd years - so don't panic too much;)
If you do have some corrosion in the gutters first rub it down as much as possible using an encapsulated wire brush (sometimes called a 'Mule Skinner') apply Deox gel to disolve was rust is left, clean thoughroughly then use some zinc rich or etch primer then top coat. For really awkward bits that cant be treated this way use a rust converter such as Aquasteel then prime and paint.
Unfortunately I think Jimmy van's roof is a little too far gone for that:(
 
Think I got off lightly with mine then... Must have caught them just in time, drivers/passenger side, along windscreen.. Ground back to bear metal used rust treatment & then metal shielded, so should be good for 10yrs "it's what it says on the can"
 
Thanks Panky & Terence. Do you think a Dremmel with a small encapsulted wire brush man enough for the job or does it need something bigger?
 
Depends on the area you are treating, if only localised then the Dremmel should be OK
 
Remember that mine sat in an open field unloved for over 10 years and all the roof top window seals were leaking so rain cascaded in and the sealant had also perished so it was inevitable. So I wouldn't worry to much. Once I've sorted the roof I will be wax oiling those channels and attending to any signs early. :)
 
Looks like a pig of a job but it will be worth it. It's a good reminder to what happens if one neglects things
 
I've just remembered where I've seen that roof before... It was on a documentary about the Titanic thought the rust looked familiar... No seriously I'd inquire with Martin to see if he does a fibreglass roof?... & do away with all the metal all together!... You could call it Robin after the reliant.... Lol
