O/D - inhibitor question.

At work so no access to manual but is it easy to adjust the inhibitor switch so it works without me having to hold the gear lever in gear?

Also, if I bypass the inhibitor switch presumably the O/D would work in all gears (obviously I would not use it in 1st or 2nd) regardless of the position of the gear lever?

as far as I can remember there isn't any adjustment, it just works as is. The only thing I can think of is if it has some washers under it.

Is the switch quite new? maybe it needs replacement

No idea how old it is. Not even sure where it is at the moment (still at work). I assume it's either at the gearstick end or at the gearbox end?

Presumably if I find it and just connect the wires together (assuming there are only two) then the O/D will work whenever I throw the switch regardless of gearstick position. I'll look into adjustment first though as I know that using it in 1st gear will kill it. I know the rally drivers and racers of the 50s and 60s used to fiddle it to work on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears to give them 7 speeds instead of the standard 5.

The switch screws into the gearbox - on the drivers side near the top, sometimes there is a similar one on the other side that is used as a reversing lamp switch. As BMM says there isn't any adjustment it may be loose or worn.

Rally drinvng in a Commer? I'd pay to see that! Yeah bypassing it will allow you to have overdrive in all gears (and fry the overdrive if you are in 1st or 2nd!) The switch is attached to the gearchange adaptor and its part of that linkage (which is actually part of the selector) which engages the switch. So unless there are some washers under the lockout switch I'd say go for a new switch - it should be only a few quid, and it should be a 5 minute fix.

hope that helps

I am not sure the issue was originally the inhibitor switch, as we troubleshot the wiring the first time we had Peggy on the ramp - and demonstrated the correct operation of the overdrive switch by having the test bulb going on and off - which wouldn't have happened if the inhibitor switch was faulty?

I have some spare inhibitor switches on the two gearboxes I have that you could try using on a swap out basis?

As I recall Andy we had to 'really' get it into gear to get the test lamp to light. As it stands you have to hold the gear lever back to keep the O/D engaged. The gear selection is OK. We can try one of your spares to see if it makes any difference.

Anyone know if it could it be the gear linkage needing adjustment?

well Bazz the linkage was my first train of thought, well worth a try mate

After i had my gearbox out I had a job getting some gears, just undo the linkage and turn the linkage clockwise (looks like a little track rod end) 1 turn and try it, its only one nut to undo and takes less than 5 minutes, just keep track of how many turns you give it in case its no good , then you can always put it back to where you started:D

martin maltas has a factory tool for setting this up correctly that he may lend you if you ask nicely?

Cheers,

I'll have a look at it properly when I have time. For now I'll probably employ a bungee cord for the longer runs!
